I can't drive stick, serious.

I'm thinking about buying one of these:

(and all the junk it comes with)

I have the ca$h saved up...

But they ONLY come in stick (6 speed)

I can't even test drive 'em... And they are pretty rare, since I only want a particular year.

I've driven a 92 corvette manual... A total of 100 feet. That's my entire shifting experience.

(You can stop laughing now.)

(serious.)

(stop it.)

Alright, I'll help you.

Get in the car.

Put your left foot in, all the way to the floor.
Put it in first.
Put your right foot in, all the way to the floor (a rev limiter helps here)
Slide your left foot off the pedal quickly.

Wala, you're moving.
Now, work on finesse

I know the 'concepts' behind driving stick, just no practice.

You're going to buy a ZR-1? Well, if you have to buy a Corvette, then the model better start with a Z. And if it's a Corvette, the proper technique for 3 pedal driving is...

1) Plant left foot on clutch pedal
2) Plant right foot on gas pedal
3) Release clutch pedal

... and away you go! Smooth as glass.

Very nice choice in vehicle BTW.

Should work in either, lol.

In all seriousness, though, stick isn't hard to learn, especially in car with a lot of power. You won't have to slip the clutch much to get going, just sit there and play with a clutch a bit when you're stopped, bringing it out to eh point where it starts biting and bogging the car (don't give it any gas, jsut clutch back in).

The hardest part about learning, and moving from car to car, is that different clutches bite at different points. You'll get comfortable enough after a little while that you won't have to repeat the exercise in every car, but to start, it makes a huge difference. Knowing the clutch engagemtn point helps you know when to feed in gas, and knowing how the clutch bites will give you confidence.

I haven't had a stick as a daily driver sine 1997, but I can (and do) hop in any car with a stick and drive it without a problem, it's not that bad.

If yo're really freaked, find the nearest Rent-A-Wreck and rent a stick from them. You're aobusing a beat-*** crappy car that costs you ~$20 for the privilege, and you learn how to get a car moving that has very little power anyways. Winnar. I've taught ~5 people to drive stick this way when I didn't have a 5MT myself.

Just for clarification... are you buying one with the Chevrolet built engine or the one with the Yamaha built engine? 1 cam or 4? 32 valves or only 16? And so on and so on...

I believe the answer you seek lies with the first pic posted in this thread.

To learn stick, here's what you do.

Go to DBTuned.
Stealthily observe the name and phone number on a customer invoice belonging to a vehicle currently in the shop.
Approach Oaf, and declare "Hello, I am Mr. Smith, and I would like to pickup my vehicle now."
Avoid eye contact with Mr. Oaf as you jerkily leave the parking lot.
Also, ensure that the name on the invoice wasn't Cohn's.

No ****, but the car that he posted a pic of looked like a standard Corvette. I thought I remembered ZR-1's having slightly different wheels. I assumed that was what he meant when he said "rare" and it's clearly a ZR-1 engine photo.

It was Mercury Marine, correct? I mispoke when I said Yamaha.

As I said earlier, very nice choice... a little tough and expensive for maintenance and replacement parts, though.
