Have you guys seen those light-up signs on Madison that say "Thursday Through Sunday is Spare the Air Day", how the hell are you not supposed to drive on a weekday if you work during the week?!

Maybe we should start "Screw the Air Day" where as many people as possible drive their biggest vehicles as much as possible.

I know where you are going with this, and it is the same place every smug homeowner goes, "Why are you buying DVD players and big rims for your trucks when you could be saving for a house!"
Nope not that at all, but why spend all that cash on the car when you could put a small portion of it towards renting a place that has a garage.
Nowadays, you need two people working making 50k a year or more to afford a home and still have money for bills. I am not going to bag on anyone in an apartment that buys nice things for themselves, you can't live off of bread and water, saving up $500 a month to put down on a house when they are appreciating at $1000-$5000 a month...
But if you thrown an extra 250 towards a nicer place with a garage - or make some friends and rent a house and save for a few months before you buy the thumping system you would have the best of both worlds. Dude with the truck probably still has credit card payments on a stereo that is now in someone else's car and no matter how you look at that, it was a bad decision...

Since the time I moved out on my own, I have never lived in a place that did not have a garage. I drove a POS honda and lived in downtown Oakland for a while as I saved towards a nicer place to live and the finer things in life.

Those that have the option to use other forms of transportaion (mass transit, carpool, bicycle, etc) are encouraged to use those means on spare the air days. Also if you can put off non-important errands then you should do that after the spare the air days.

But if you can't be flexable then you don't have to be.

I chose to test ride a couple of bikes on saturday that was a spare the air day. One of the bikes was a Triumph Rocket III with a 2.3 liter engine I was not saving the planet.

Besides, the RTW day isn't about saving the air as much as it's about showing the public and others that many people ride.

Heheh do you all remember that one article from "The Onion" where it was something like "100% of people polled agree that mass transit is the way to go for everybody else."

Anyone have a premium subscription to the Big O? I would like to see that one again.
