Noob questions:
When the turbo is spooled up is there more fuel being injected into the mix, or strictly just compressed air? Does it save gas to stay off the turbo?

 

More fuel needs to be mixed in with more air, otherwise you will run dangerously lean and have the possibility of detonating.

I take it the ECU controls the mixture depending on the engine RPM? Does it factor in the turbo RPM?

 

the ECU does control the a/f ratio. Not sure about the turbo rpm part.

 

The ECU uses things like the MAF sensor (Mass air flow) or MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) to determine how much fuel to add depending on vacuum/boost condition, throttle position, gear, etc.

And that's the simple version.
