So Im at work at UCD fleet services, they get a call for a car stranded(out of gas??). One of the techs goes out in the tow truck, turns out this dip **** saw the gas light come on, and immediately pulled over and called for help, ****ing brilliant, so funny, made my day.

That's why that light is there, to let you know you need to get gas soon! Most tanks have a bit of extra materal so that over the years you can hit the light a few times w/o any major issues, but really, it's better to get gas before the light comes on. Maybe that guy already ran on the tank a few times and didn't want to risk it.
