I have ADT, but it is odd to me that nothing was done,It is soppost to go to the police department, Im sure it will be some week *** reason why it failed or was not active(even did a alarm check when I moved in with them) I have ADT coming out to my house to investigate.......but I agree alarms are a scam.

social engineering can defeat both the alarm, the monitoring, and your neighbors as is proven time and time again by the "im a workman working on the house" routine.

IMO, home alarm systems, just like car alarm systems, are one piece of a bigger picture in deterring thieves. Like IX said, dogs, unpredictable schedules and other methods are important.
Another thing that I've found helpful is to be friends with your neighbors. They get used to your schedule and the way things appear, and will know when something doesn't look right. I also am lucky in that my neighbor two doors down is a good friend, so we keep an eye on each others house when the other is out of town, clean up stuff from the front accumulating news papers, handle putting the garbages at the curb and bringing them back up, etc. You can't rely on any one thing to keep yourself, or your property safe.

^^ for serious. Home security is a reason I like working from home a few days a month. To make sure people know I'm home, and to throw them off, I'll go out and mow the lawn at 10 AM, make sure they see me in the garage or out front during the day once or twice, etc

Keeping close with the block is a very good plus.
Half of the neighbors on my street are some form of peace officer. They have non-standard work hours and are armed. The other half work in education. Half of those are off for the summer.
If that doesn't work and the alarm doesn't work then the cameras help with the detective work.
My parents home was burglerized when I was a kid. My ex GF car was stolen just outside our appartment bedroom window. It's a war out there. Shoot to kill.
