They are but the War on Terror needs quality operators who work well across the human battlefield. The money spent on the F-22 would have been better invested in UAVs (such as the Reaper and the Predator) and a interoperable operator/CAS interface.

True, but "real" wars require air superiority and rapid airstrike capability. I wouldn't want to give up our traditional advantage in those areas just yet.

Oh, I totally agree on the spending elsewhere. What are those things, like $200 million each?

Yup, and we've got soldiers on the ground in body armor that isn't the best and we're struggling to field MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles). How much real danger are F-16/14/18 pilots really in?

I agree however the question remains to be asked, how long will humans really need to fly missions? I think we invested an insane amount of money into an increasing antiquated profession (fighter pilots). An E-1 private can smack 99% of the world's fighter planes out of the air with a $10,000 surface to air missile. Lets have UAVs for ground support and missile systems that dominate the air for the foreseeable future and save the trillions of dollars and save American lives in real time.
