Dr. Dad says:

if your poor and get sick allot, take an HMO. itl keep your visiting costs down, theres tons of network docs, ect ect. but, and trust me i have personal experience with this, when it comes to needing a real diagnosis or long term treatment you should probly just kill yourself before they do.

PPO is best if you have enough money to pay for incidental medical needs. if you get in a serious car accident HMO might cost you 1g whereas PPO could cost 5, depending on limits. Say you get HI5 from some beezy from SC at my house and you have to go on the cocktail, HMO will cost less but what are the odds of you being ra88it? lols

basically if your a healthy person that has a half way descent job a PPO is better. HMO might be better if you have kids for all the colds/checkups/shots n stuff but generally speaking PPO is the best bet for a single employed person.

If you are generally healthy and don't go to the doctor much, I think that an HMO is a better way to go. I used to always pick the PPO because I wanted a choice of doctors (and if I wrecked my knee or something, I wanted to be able to choose the doctor.) I never really needed to go to the doctor much, so the PPO was a huge hassle. Lots more paperwork and 95+% of the doctors in the
directory were not accepting new patients. On top of this, when I did go to get a normal physical, it wasn't covered at all, and I was several hundred dollars out of pocket. It was a lot of hassle, and I never really gained anything by having all that flexibility. If you had an existing relationship with a doctor and wanted to keep going to them, then you are more likely to be able to do this with a PPO.

My wife and I are on Kaiser now, and we have been quite happy with it. I hardly go, but we had a baby and that all was very easy. I very much like the one stop shopping - pay your copay and you are done. Also, Kaiser has several nice facilities in Roseville so everything is very convenient. No reimbursements or 'explanation of benefits' to figure out. We (and our parents, who have had several major operations) have been happy with Kaiser, but I don't have any experience with other HMOs.
