2. Stand alone system; no intgrated into the audio system.
3. Ease of use.
4. Can store many waypoints.
5.Accuracy!

I have a TOM TOM and Magellan. Both work very well. I'd say the Tom tom is a bit easier to use. From what I read the Garmin Nuvi series is the way to go.

Stick with Garmin. The Nuvi line is really nice, easy to use and easy to move between cars.

Garmin

Get a Nuvi if you only need to go from where you are currently to a destination. It will just take you there. This is fine for most users.

Otherwise look into the other garmin models that let you plan your route along via points so it takes the roads you want to take. (used streetpilot 2820 or 2700 series are cheap)

I just picked up a Blackbird for next to nothing. You can give it to her to try out and see if she likes it, if you want.

one advantage that the built in units have is that most of them use dead reckoning via yaw sensors and speedo inputs when signal is lost. With the stand alones if you are coming up from an underground parking garage it won't know where you are until it gets signal. And then it won't know what direction you are pointed until it gets more samples of you moving. The dead reckoning models will know where you are and what direction. So when you do get to the exit it already knows to make a left or a right.
