What version of MacOS does the Powerbook have installed? Will OSX run on it?

The Powerbook has 10.4 Tiger Server installed, as I was going to use it for a fileserver. I can install a regular install of 10.4 if you'd like.

What's the difference between server and regular? Does it run at a usable speed? How do you keep the battery in?

If you buy a replacement battery from Apple, it comes modified to work correctly. I was using a cardboard shim to keep the battery seated.

10.4 Server has lots of built-in stuff for acting as a file/web server. Most people have no need for it. It runs at a usable speed, which is nice about Macs. I was debating about getting a wireless card and just using it for web browsing and DVDs. It's the 14.1" screen version.

Does the DVD drive have problems reading CD's/DVD's, or is it some other kind of funkiness? Can you post pics of the damage?

I'm just interested in getting something where I can learn a little about MacOS.

Basically, it's a slot-load DVD drive, and you might have to insert disks a few times to get it to 'click-in' and read the disk. It works, but it's a bit funky. But if you want something cheap to learn OS X on, it'll do the job.
