lol, point well taken. but still, the H22A actually gets decent gas mileage, and if you try to run it on 87, it loses quite a bit of that mileage. it will also hesitate, misfire, and do all sorts of other crazy things that are not fun for car or driver. well maybe for some drivers...
and to continue the other discussion, i use chevron quite frequently in my car, and i've never had a problem with their gas. spark plugs always come out clean, never gives me problems with stuttering, or anything else. and it might just be the but dyno talking, but i've noticed that the techron fuel system cleaner works really well.

Personally I'll go about 4 months at Shell and then 4 months at Chevron and vice versa.
I'm just trying to prevent one set of additives from building up too much. Shell cleans off the Chevron and Chevron returns the favor later.

also, gas stations do not exclusively sell their "brand". they're only required to sell a certain percentage to meet their franchise requirements, beyond that who really knows what you're pumping into your car.

Personally, running 87 in either the Landcruiser (which is supercharged and gets like 10mpg) or the Legacy (which is turbo, and gets like 16mpg) is not worth the possible engine destruction due to detonation.
IMO, if you want to run anything less than premium, get a vehicle that does not require premium. Get a beater honda that gets 30mpg or something. It says premium fuel only for a reason.

A stock STi calls for 93 octane w/ 91 being the minimum. The law requires that all vehicles be capable of running 87. And the STi can do it but it must knock first before it pulls enough timing to cope.
