Fire crews responded to a home in a newer subdivision on Paso Fino Way, just south of Elk Grove Boulevard.
The fire was contained to an area of the garage near a power panel, which utility crews said had been tampered with. Fire officials said the panel was overloaded.
"The house was being used for growing marijuana," Elk Grove Community Serivces District Fire Department Battalion Chief Sean Stumbaugh said. "In a situation like this, I told all of our folks to be aware of possible booby traps and those types of hazards that typically you would find out in the forest."
No one was inside the home at the time of the fire and no arrests have been made.
Neighbors said they have been complaining about the rental home for months because the tenants have not been maintaining the yard.
"It's very disappointing. I have two little children. I moved to a great neighborhood and I want to keep them away from drugs and crime," area resident Erin Rose said.
"To find out this criminal element is right within our midst -- it's very unsettling," area resident Andrew Paisley said.
Investigators obtained a search warrant to enter the home to begin counting and cataloguing the plants. A police officials said there more than 75 plants inside the home.

I like how everybody's complaining about "the criminal element int he neighborhood" when the only complaint about them was that their grass was too long.
Heh, that was kinda funny actually...

Hahaha if that was my house all the trees would have been smoked already
and you can get a lot of weed off one plant, several ounces each harvest but it depends on the kind. Its usually a pretty good indicator someones growing pot when they have a $5000 electric bill every month
Yes.

They found 300 plants IIRC, and the reason the house caught on fire was faulty wiring into an unmetered main electrical line so they could get around the $5000 grower-flag electricity bill.
