yup, got to work and the power was already out....woohoo?
The drive to work wasnt bad. There was of course your usual "zomg the road is wet i cant go over 45 or I'll spin out of control" Z06, but my bald re070's stuck to the road fine and there was little force from the wind to battle. However, when i got to starbucks (right on cannery row in monterey, about 50 feet from the bay) i took two steps from the car and almost fell over....multiple times. Then, after i got back into the car, while i was situating myself and drinking more of my coffee so it didnt spill, a lid came off of one ofthe trash cans and pegged my car...i shall inspect for damage later

It would be if I was preaching for us to make cleaner burning cars, and hire MPG standards, but I'm not. I'm stating we need to get rid of gasoline as a fuel source all together and stop wasting our time with these bull**** bandaids. The new smog regulations look like they are doing HUGEEEEEE fixes on paper, but has anyone shown any form of hardcore evidence that these new regulations have slowed down the earths cycle at ALL comparatively to previous regulations

Last night at work was pretty funny. Our data center has redundant UPS' for the computer room floor, but not for the floor area where all the cubes/offices are. We also have huge generators that kick on as soon as a power outage is detected, but there's a three second delay.
So, if you're like most of the staff, you have a laptop that you use. Some of the people in the building use desktop PCs though. If you're on a laptop and the power goes out, the laptop keeps running on its own battery, on a PC, you're shut down.
My boss has a PC. The power dropped and her PC went down. She booted it back up when the generators kicked in and started doing her work again. Just as she was getting ready to save, the power drops again. We all start laughing when we hear her yell "GOD DAMMITT!!!!!" She boots the PC back up, but it doesn't even get up before the power cycles again.
She goes "I'm outta here, see ya."

Lots of places have cleaner air than a few decades ago.
Mandated alternative fuel.....meh. Optional. Sure sign me up. As long as I can get it cheap, at convienient locations, and it produces good power.
If I could legally run any cat I wanted I would do so rather than run catless. But as it is right now It's the same penalty.
I don't have any solutions but I know these things are not it.
Mass transit - doesn't work for people who commute or need to do more than just get to/from work. I'd be inclined to take a 2 hour ride on a high speed train to LA for the weekend though.
Not adding Lanes - Some think that adding lanes makes more traffic. Wheather there are lanes or not I am still going to go from point A to Point B in a car. I save more resources when I am moving and not parked on a freeway.
Here are some things that I do think work.
Incentives for alternate fuel vehicles - Lot's of people got a Prius because of the temporary HOV exemptions. I think that's a great idea. Shouldn't be permenant. Just long enough to give the new stuff a push. Some douche cops in Gilbert AZ were trying to say that motorcycles didn't qualify for HOV access unless they had a passenger. But that's a different rant.
Lane splitting/filtering/sharing - This works in California. It's a great incentive for people to ride motorcycles rather than cars. Although some cars are now more fuel efficient/cleaner burning than most motorcycles. More bikes reduces congestion. Other states need to allow this behavior. Texas was considering it.
Telecommuting - Bosses hate this because they can't keep an eye on employees. As long as my stuff is getting done who the eff cares.

Ya, the Intel building over by you (old Level One Communications bldg) lost power and they're shipping some of those folks over here for meetings and whatnot. Folsom is fine for the moment.
My data center is protected by that new UPS system I put in and some of the office buildings have EGEN power. My office building does not have EGEN so if the power goes out, so does Mike.

Of course I'm only working until lunch anyway - cable guy (sucks to be him) is coming at 1:00.
