Regardless of where it's going, all packages follow almost the same route. They are received, go to a single distribution center, then back out for delivery. The package itself will be physically handled only a few times.
FedEx for example, their distribution center is in Memphis. Every package they deliver goes through Memphis. Even if Memphis doesn't make any geographical sense. Package received in San Jose will get picked up, go to Memphis, then back out and delivered to its destination in Sacramento.
The only time they don't follow that route is ground packages and 1-day, special circumstance deals.
But even the ground route is similar, it will be on the same truck for most of the journey.
Their business model is kinda ****ty. But their method is good for high volume which is what they do.
Bertha gave me the same party line. My problem with that statement is this: what is the difference if that package goes from A to B than if it goes from A to C where B is somewhere between A and C? It's not as though the packaging expires once it gets to a certain location.
