Ever check out www.zillow.com?

Gives you estimated home values based on comps in the area.

I found out my when my grandparents bought their house in 1956, they paid less than we would for a new IS350 (yes I know about inflation)

A friend just showed it to me today, and the estimates in my neighborhood seem mostly reasonable (One house that is currently for sale is asking 20k more than the estimate.) If nothing else you can easily see what things have actually sold for.

I think that's probably correct. I'm guessing that the site uses public records to determine purchase price and then assigns a rate of growth based on location. I'm betting that this is how it works b/c my house that we finished around January 2004 essentially had a "purchase price" only for what it cost us to build which is what we pay tax on... much lower than the actual market value when we finished. This may be why the value on zillow.com is easily 125-150K low. I think that most custom homes would be badly undervalued on this site.

Yep, checked out my to be first home. 460 square foot garage, not the biggest, but hopefully tall enough inside for a lift.

pretty cool web "toy" but its nothing to base your financial future on.

they have our house at about $50k above what we just had it appraised at.
i wish our house was worth what they say it is.
that would be awesome! i'd sell right now!
but alas.

i like being able to see the parcels and the property info.

wow, it shows my house is worth $443K

I think thats a little high though....also it shows that its a condominium when its actually a house.

Everything else is correct though (house size, lot size, bd, bt, etc)

My house is supposedly worth twice as much as we paid for it. There is no way I could afford to buy my house today.
