its really pretty dam easy. someone  got a 40% roi recently and he didnt have to do anything...
starting about a year i got heavy into commodities... so i hva e mixed feelings about $120/barrel oil. sucks to fillup but ive already made that money back and then some, and i beet inflation while i was doing it.

etrade, scotttrade type services are good for purchasing stocks / futures / options. it really all depends on your level of comfort. if you want a hands off approach that you can throw money at for later in life just find a descent mutal fund. most mutual funds with have a minimum buy in between $2000-10000.
2 of my accounts are controlled by a money manager which means i work with an adviser to determine my level of exposure in the areas i'm investing in. for example, of account consists entirely of domestic mid and high cap companies while the other is small and medium cap foreign companys (split 40% europe, 30% asia, 30% TBD by the advisor as he sees fit). it allows allows me to control my level of exposure in different sectors (ie, energy, tech, oil, manufacturing).
on a smaller scale its easy for the individual investor to mirror the breakdown of large mutal funds asset allocations and use them as a guideline for investing.
my general rule of thumb that i pass along to just about everyone i know is that i never let myself get more than 5k invested in a single company, but thats because i got absolutely murdered on Lucent.

Just curious why you chose $5,000. Was that based on a percentage of something else? Or just what you're comfortable to "lose" (part of)?
