Big ups to Canon...
A few months ago I started noticing a strange marks in the images from my 1 series camera and had assumed that I just needed to clean the sensor. Originally it only showed up at at F/10 and higher but it got gradually worse. It appeared to just be stubborn sensor dust at first, but more recently it started to look like a streak in the image.
It is a little hard to see in images that were reduced in size so I circled it in the image below:

This is a 100% crop of the same image:

After having no luck removing the streak myself I decided to take the camera to a pro to have it cleaned. When I went to pick up the camera, I was informed that the area in question was not something that could be cleaned. In fact, it appeared that the mark was between the protective glass over the sensor and the sensor itself - not good.
I have only had the camera for 8 months and have taken less than 1,300 shots and was not happy about the prospect of having to come out of pocket to replace the sensor. Since the camera was under warranty the shop suggested that we send it back to Canon to have them take a look at it.
So last Monday I dropped the camera off and was told by the shop that I should expect to be without it for at least a month.
Today after lunch, I got a phone call and recognized the caller ID as the shop that sent the camera out for me. I fully expected to be told that Canon was not going to cover the repair and that I was going to have a battle on my hands. To my surprise, the news I got was quite different. Not only was Canon going to cover this under warranty, but they had my camera back in the store with a brand new sensor installed by Canon's repair center.
All I can say is that I am shocked and impressed by the speed in which Canon turned and burned on this repair. The camera was only out of my hands for a week including the shipping time to and from Canon's repair center, I could not be more pleased...

I LOVE CANON!
DZ, congrats on the free replacement!
werd up to canon.
i wonder if what they sent you was another refurbished one that had already been gone through.
many times they'll do that to expedite the repair time and fix the one you sent back at a normal pace.
only bad thing is you can sometimes get one that has more miles on it or has been more roughly treated that the one you sent in.
if you're concerned about it, check your serial #'s against your original one.
if they're different, look to see how far off the #'s are...if it's worlds earlier, you may have gotten an older one back in return.
sometimes you can raise cain about it and use the older one until they get you your repaired one back in exchange.

I am guessing that the quick turn around time had a lot to do with the fact that it is a 1 series camera.
