Question ATTN: Home Owners

What do you guys use for pest and weed control?

The one thing I hate about this house is how good the effing soil is, and how close we are to this god damned field.

I get **** loads of weeds in the back yard and wasps to boot. To control the weeds by pulling them, I'd spend probably 2 hours per week easy from September to June. I'd rather concrete the whole ****in thing.

And I've got wasps back there. I went out there to knock over some wasps nests so those little *****es wouldn't start building an army in my back yard again, and after knocking down one I almost got seriously owned.

Running through a wet back yard, wearing flip flops for shoes, with wasps chasing you is NOT fun.

Gimme some recos'. I don't have a bunch of $$ to spend on the care, but I'd be willing to part with like $40/mo for a gardner (looks like a few SRIC members will be getting higher rent soon...) and a few hundred for a good pest control service that can deal with wasps, man eating spiders, and ants.

Thanks, homies. And please, postwhore crew, don't derail my thread. I'd like to have at least one thread in SRIC that is helpful and on-topic for once.

I use Golden Bear Pest Control for my pest control. They come every other month and spray for ants, spiders, etc. around the foundation. If I ever have bee or wasp problems, I just call them up and they come out at no charge (beyond the bi-monthly fee). I think right now it is $55 for their bi-monthly spraying (so about $300/year).

As for weeds, I just do it myself. I have 1/4 acre, so quit your biotching.

Being a home owner sucks this time of year because everything is coming out of the dormant, winter state. I think the best you can do is call a pest control service like Egan. Meet with them the first time they come out and physically point out the hot spots. Then periodically do this every few months as a reminder.

As for weeds, simply pull them and apply round-up to the exposed soil. I use a hand-compressed sprayers with concentrate round-up. Weeds will inevitably come back. I think radiation and napalm is the only sure fix.

As for weeds in grass, I alternate Scott's weed and feed and Scott's Turf Builder. Usually before the start of a season or when I feel the urge. You can even pick up a pair of old golf spikes to wear while you mow your grass.

I got seriously owned by weed on the lawn last year (last spring of my home ownership). I'm going to try the Scotts this year.

i got tired of trying to manage my yard and hired a gardener. they do a decent job at $65 a month. they mow the lawn, edge, pull weeds, trim the bushes in the front and back yard, and fertilize the front.

the way i look at it is: i can spend an hour a week on the yard doing general stuff and one day a month doing the hard stuff, or pay about $15 a week and have someone else do it all.

edit: yeah, it's cheap and i am getting what i'm paying for. it's not the greatest service evar, but it's a heck of a lot better than i could do.

attention homePwnZrs

I spent the whole daying mowing and edging... I think what I need to do is simply hire a gardner and just repair more home computers every month to cover it. I clean spyware off of peoples computers for $50 an hour as a side job and have been turning away work. I would rather spend two hours in my office repairing computers to cover a gardner than spend 10 hours a month busting my *** when Chavez Chavez and sons could do it better and in half the time.

As for pest control I just canned Orkin because they did such a good job that all my pests are GONE. They were biotches about it when I cancelled tho...

I am in Regency Park, parkisde at Natomas.

If you head down Natomas (truxel...) turn right at Club Center and a left of Regency park you will come to a big *** park. I live across the street on a corner overlooking the entrance to the park.

I am having my backyard created this year. That is going to be fun... blah...

I did the concrete and rock thing

now I have half court basketball, patio, & a waterfall in my back yard

up in Reno water cost a lot so the rest of the yard will be done in rock, real easy to take care of.
