To the guys saying they don't "get" anime, you're thinking about it wrong. Anime is like saying film, or radio, or comic books. Ther'es going to be crappy stuff, and there's going to be good stuff. It's not for a child audience in most cases, and it's easiest to think of it as a 10-13-23-part story. Watching one or two episodes, out of sequence, doesn't do much, it's the whole story. In this case, this is the first episode and it's introducing characters, setiing up the group dynamics. Japanese film in general is just less heavy-handed than american cinema, andmost anime will make assumptions about the intended audince, sucha speople watching an anime about ronin, or wandering samurai, will understand not only the honor codes and all that they imply, but also what could drive different elements of the cahracter's personalities as a result.
Saying you don't like anime is like saying you don't like movies, you're just narrowing to one source (foreign film) and one genre in this case (modern samurai). Japan is just going to tend towards that as a common theme the same way American TV is overtaken with crime and lawyer drama...make sense?
It doesn't help that mostof what people are exposed to are the kid's shows (dragonball, etc) or very old series like Lupin.
Check out Cowboy Bebop if you want to see a completely different type of series, with excellent production. It's a futuristic bounty-hunter series with a somewhat modern setting, if that makes sense......
