Anybody know what the difference is between an STi windshield and a standard one?

I've been pricing windshield replacement due to my mishap today and there is a huge difference in cost between an STi windshield through Subaru and glass through another manufacturer. I was just quoted $280 installed for an STi windshield from another manufacturer vs. about $900 for the Subaru one. Also, I have a quote for $169 for a standard (non STi) windshield from the same manufacturer (Pilkington, I believe) as the $280 quote above. What's interesting is that Pilkington is a British company now owned by Nippon (who I think makes the glass for Subaru). The owner at the glass company said that the only difference is that the STi has the black dots (ugly) at the top of the glass for shading. I had heard that the STi glass is lighter or something...What gives? What's the difference between WRX/Imprezza glass and STi glass. At the rate that I break windshields, I'm inclined to get the $169 windshield. I have an appointment to put it in tomorrow. Somebody stop me if I'm making a big mistake.

Don't u have insurance that will cover all but like $100 of this? And I don't mean that you have to pay your normal deductable, I thought windshields were in a different category?????

Some companies may do it that way, but Geico does not. Believe me, I know. Still, $169 installed is much better than shelling out a $500 deductible.

Actually, I price shop every time I buy a new car. Different companies have different claims experiences with different makes and models. I've had 6 cars over the last 5 years and I still have Geico. I'm 29 and my wife is 24... with my '05 STi and her '02 Explorer XLT 4x4 our insurance is less than $200/mo. and that's with 300/500 liability, 100/300 UM/UIM, $50K property damage, and $500 deductibles. Typically I carry higher deductibles b/c the most frequently damaged part on our cars are the windshields... they get repaired for free and usually cost less than $250 to replace. I priced 21st Century when I bought the car and it was twice as much. What are some of you guys paying?

Do you have an STi or a WRX? The quote I got today for an STi replacement windshield was $280 and only $169 for non STi. I don't care about the black sun shading at the top of the STi windshield (I don't even like it) so I'm going with the standard windshield. Neither one of those prices is more than most people pay on their deductibles... some may have $250 though I guess, but still not much different.

I think me and the wife pay about 330 for both our cars ( STi and 2000 Sentra and our renters insurance) but we have really high limits and a $200 deductible

I always tell the insurance agents " my record is clean and I have had no accidents, but when I do, its going to be a whopper.. I need high limits"

its fun, it makes them cry a bit

If you add our homeowner's insurance, then it's more like $270 to make an even comparison... and I think we're younger than you guys by a year or 2???

I think only the rear window glass is thinner on the STi to save a few pounds. They won't use thinner glass for the windshield because then grasshoppers will go right through the glass when you drive down Hwy 5 in the central valley.
