i took the racks off after three weeks of snowboarding. i figured, season is over... its getting hot... time to take it off. so i took it off the other day and found indentations where the mounting clips were. it looks like the clips where it hooks under the molding left marks where the clips were snug and tight. we only hand tightened it so i didnt think it would leave a mark like that. i did put one layer of electrical tape where it hooks under the pillar molding. is that normal for you guys too? or did we tighten it too tight? dammit...
oh, in case you needed to know, i have a thule rack.

I have an STi. I use the clip on roof rack too. When i purchased the rack the guy told me not to leave the rack on for more than a few days at a time. So everytime i came home from tahoe i would remove it. I got little marks on the body but they polished off when i waxed it. Also the clips pulled on the molding but didnt damage it. I used the tape that came with the rack. So the key is to not leave the rack on the car for more than a few days at a time. BTW my rack is a yakama.
I used to have an outback, and yes the wagon is definately a better system with the roof rack mounts built onto the roof. But its a small price to pay to have an STi. Its only once a year and a few days at a time.

i have a Yakima rack that mounts to the moulding that you spoke of. there are no visibles indentations on my sedan. could you have overtightened the clamps?
my only disappointment so far are the scratches that the pads left on the paint, but that's the least of my worries when i'm driving through mud, gravel, snow, and salt.
edited to say that i have the Yakima rack system and not the Thule system.
