August 29, 2008 R.I.P. Phil Hill

1961 Formula One world champion Phil Hill has died. The only American-born F1 world champion died after complications arising from Parkinson's disease. He was 81.
Miami-born Phil Hill began his racing career in sportscars, notably MG TCs, before graduating swiftly to Ferraris.
In 1952 he came sixth in the Carrera Panamerica road race, following it up with second two years later.
After winning the 1955 SCCA championship, Hill picked up a contract to drive sportscars with Ferrari. Hill had his sights set on grand prix racing, and despite initial reluctance from Enzo Ferrari to place the American in one of his cars, eventually Hill was given the break he deserved.
Hill won three of his 48 grand prix starts and the Formula One crown with Ferrari in 1961. He also won Le Mans three times, the Nurburgring 1000kms and became part of the works Ford sportscar team in 1964-1965.
He retired in 1967 but continued his association with motorsport working for Road and Track magazine and as a grand prix tour host.
He will be missed.
