Yes it does help! Basically the only thing u really need to get started in auto x is tires. I bought an extra set of rims so I have tires for daily driving and a set for auto x. If $$ is an issue and you have to work with a budget, fallen azenis rt 615s are a good auto x tire to begin with. Slicks would be best but those are expensive and hard to learn on if it will be your first time out there lol stock rims or aftermarket??
Just come down and enjoy the racing...you'll be suprised what a well balanced GC can achieve...ask Gagan..he used to kick our turbocharged asses week in week out

To be competitive with very few mods, keep the stock RSB on because like the above poster pointed out...an aftermarket RSB bumps you into another class. Here is a link with some great info on classes!
I know its from nastysock (nasioc) but its a good source of info.

depends...for example, I do not have a SCCA membership because I don't go to SCCA events!! Not to knock on on any scca members or anyone affiliated with scca, but I don't understand spending 30-50 $$ for 3 laps of racing and you have to be there all day. Whereas, with Golden Gate Lotus Club (GGLC), you pay $45 for a full day which equates to about anywhere from 12-20 laps of racing. The reason why they can do this is because they cap the number of cars allowed at each event so you just have to be sure and register early enough. Now, I would consider myself for of a hobbyist with the sport than a competitor. GGLC is more of a car enthusiast/hobbyist group of people who like to go out once and month and auto x. It's perfect for me since I'm a college student and would rather be here in school for the majority of my weekends.
Cliffs:
I race with GGLC- $45 for around 12-20 laps unlike scca which is around the same price for a lot less laps.
Yes the racing for GGLC is in marina ca so for many of us in the Bay area its around 1 hr. 40 min. to get there, but its not that bad.
GGLC doesn't really do all of the inspections etc. that scca does, because as I said above, its more of a relaxed group of people where scca is quite competitive.
just my 2 cents on the matter.
However, in your case, your location is really really far from marina lol
