Competition Tires
I was wondering what people would recommend as a good DOT slick to autox with. I want to use a DOT slick so I can stay in my stock class. Right now I'm looking at hoosiers, toyos, yokohamas, and michelins. Along with overall performance I'm looking for a tire that will last for about 2 seasons because I don't have the money to buy new tires every season. My buddy runs yokohamas and has gotten 2 and a half out of them. Any insight on what you think works best would be a big help.
To the administrators....please don't bump this to the tire section because I feel this applies to autox more. Thanks.

Kumho Victoracers will give much better life than Hoosiers and can actually pass as street tires in the dry or damp conditions,
standing water will easily cause hydroplaning though. I could usually get about 2 years and 8k-10k miles out of a set of Victoracers on my Miata.

I have the OEM 16" wheels. I see that the Kumho Victoracers only come in a 225/50 but the stock tires are 205/55. Will a 225 tire still fit in my WRX's wheel wells?

There is a competitor here locally running 225/50's on his 2.5 RS in GS so you should be okay. You'd rather have a 7" -7.5" wide wheel for the 225, but it will fit on a 6"-6.5" wide wheel, it is just a lot of work for the installer. As far as fitting in the wheel wells, STi's come with 225/45-17 and I'm getting ready to put 255/40-17 Victoracers on my Sti, they were on the AS winning STi at the Atlanta Pro Solo this past weekend.

R-Compounds will definitely not last as long as street tires. Dependin gon the amt. of events and surface conditon (concrete vs. asphalt) your r-compounds MAY last a full season... but I wouldn't expect them to.
So then the question becomes, how much do you have to spend on tires? R-Compounds are expensive... and don't last that long. If your 2-years is 6 events each year... yeah, they may make it... but I'd just say get new tires next year anyway as the rubber will harden a little bit next winter.

Just my .02 but if you're looking for something that's sticky as hell, but still gets a "little" wear and tear life, try the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. Besides a wicked tread pattern, these things get gooey when they're hot. I ran them on the little Taladega track on my '80 TR8 last November and was very impressed with them. The harder I ran, the more grip I had. I had a driving instructor with me who kept telling me to ease up because he thought the tires were getting ready to let go, but they held every time. After a while, he just shut up and hung on for the ride. I am really happy with them...give 'em a try.

I had good experience with Falken Azenis Sports in the past. Decent tire on the street as well, got a good 10k driving + autox out of them. It was a little slick in the rain but not intolerable. They are also very affordable. Good luck

Jeremy...do you have to heat up those Goodyears to get them sticky. Most autox are so short that you don't build up enough heat in them so many autox specific tires are softer than other competition tires.
I've used Victoracer V700s and Azenis so far. (and RE92s
)
The Kumhos lasted for 1 season + 1 slush round at which point they were down to the cord. These were 225 and worked well on the stock rim - really light, sticky, great turn in. I didn't get them heat cycled or shaved though which could help longevity. Last year I bought some Azenis which I use day to day as well as Auto-X. These have lasted 1.5 seasons + 20,000 miles. I think they are great for the money, but are not even in the same ballpark as the V700s unless the surface is really gravelly/crappy.
