Competition Tires

I was wondering what people would recommend as a good DOT slick to autox with. I want to use a DOT slick so I can stay in my stock class. Right now I'm looking at hoosiers, toyos, yokohamas, and michelins. Along with overall performance I'm looking for a tire that will last for about 2 seasons because I don't have the money to buy new tires every season. My buddy runs yokohamas and has gotten 2 and a half out of them. Any insight on what you think works best would be a big help.

To the administrators....please don't bump this to the tire section because I feel this applies to autox more. Thanks.

I have the OEM 16" wheels. I see that the Kumho Victoracers only come in a 225/50 but the stock tires are 205/55. Will a 225 tire still fit in my WRX's wheel wells?

Yes they will. The Kumhos are the better bang for the buck. How long they will last depends on a few factors... surface, temperatures, and how many runs you do in a year. I'm afraid what you asked for (2 seasons) will not be attainable if you do more than 6 events a year, no matter what tire you choose. Even a set of Falkens will wear out in a years time of a full season (12 events) of auto-x.

R-Compounds will definitely not last as long as street tires. Dependin gon the amt. of events and surface conditon (concrete vs. asphalt) your r-compounds MAY last a full season... but I wouldn't expect them to.

So then the question becomes, how much do you have to spend on tires? R-Compounds are expensive... and don't last that long. If your 2-years is 6 events each year... yeah, they may make it... but I'd just say get new tires next year anyway as the rubber will harden a little bit next winter.

Jeremy...do you have to heat up those Goodyears to get them sticky. Most autox are so short that you don't build up enough heat in them so many autox specific tires are softer than other competition tires.

I've used Victoracer V700s and Azenis so far. (and RE92s )

The Kumhos lasted for 1 season + 1 slush round at which point they were down to the cord. These were 225 and worked well on the stock rim - really light, sticky, great turn in. I didn't get them heat cycled or shaved though which could help longevity. Last year I bought some Azenis which I use day to day as well as Auto-X. These have lasted 1.5 seasons + 20,000 miles. I think they are great for the money, but are not even in the same ballpark as the V700s unless the surface is really gravelly/crappy.

Sounds good, thanks for the advice. I'm gonna go with the 225 victoracer because it seems like the best choice based on cost and performance.
