What competition tires to buy?

I will have 17 X 8 wheels and I want to run some race rubber on them. What competition tires do you recommend? I know a lot of people use the Kumho's. What tire size should I get for the 17 X 8 wheels?

Nate,
You really should learn to drive the car as it is before you step up to R compounds. You already have a lot of mods. I've been auto-x'ing for several years already and haven't fully made the jump to Rs myself. There's so much to learn on street tires. Getting R's will just be an expensive add-on that will wear out before you even learn the stuff the street tires can teach you.

If you are convinced that you need to get R compounds, get Kumho Victoracer V700 or Ecsta V700. I have a personal preference to the regular V700s but many others run Ecstas. As for size, I am not sure since it depends on your offset. But just off the top of my head, 255/40s or 245/45s would fit.

Then what tires should I go with for the track? Stock RE070's? I now have two different sets of wheels, and I want to use the BF Goodrich KDW's mostly for daily driving. I want to have a seperate track tire, and that is why I was considering race rubber. I ordered the 17 X 8 Rota Torque's with a offset of 48, so what size tire do you recommend.

I will not be dragging more than a few more time with this car. I will not be using slicks or race rubber to drag. You do not want that much grip with our cars and our trannys. I have been told that the more slip in the tires the easier it is on the tranny. I will be driving on the track for the Aloha 500, and for autoX. Which I don't want slicks for either. I just want some grippy competition tires, but from what it sounds like I need some more experience before I get those tires.

I'm kinda currently in the process of making the move. I bought some used V700s from a friend but tore one at a track day. I've had several auto-x's on them but never really got used to them. I was actually faster on my street tires.

I recently bought a used set from Barry (bdrift) so I'll make my second attempt next month.

Nate,
Good auto-x tires are Falken Azenis and Kumho MXs. The MXs are good for track days too. The Azenis, not so much as they get greasy fast. I heard that the new Azenis has addressed that problem though.

Thanks Mark, but what size tire should I use? I want a tire more for track days than AutoX.

If you don't mind rolling you fenders you can run a 245/40/17 or stick with a stock size.

Hey then what if you run a 235/40 or 235/45 they would fit fine. Isn't there a video on SubyDude's site that shows a WRX with 255/45?

Well I'm not willing to roll my fender, but I don't want stock tire size. I would have bought different wheels if I knew I couldn't run any wider tires.

I used to run 255/40s on my stock wheels using 5mm spacers without rolling it. But my car isn't lowered.

I don't know what size you should go but I don't see why you can't fit a 235 without rolling even with a drop. It really depends on your offset though.

I think you could run a 235/40 with the right camber settings no matter how low the car is. Ask WRX151 he runs 235's on his car and it lowered.
