A lot of restaurant these days have dishes that are way over powered, packed with too many flavors making their dishes to be overwhelming. Last Saturday, I went to Sawtelle Kitchen and their dishes showed me what simplicity is all about. Their dishes were flavorful but not "bam"ly overwhelming. They offer Japanese flavors in their dishes and yet, they aren't really aiming for American acustomed big flavors. Common dishes such as curry, katsu, seafood and steaks part of the many options. Their appetizers were categorized in the hot and cold categories.

I started of with an artichoke dip appetizer. Along side of it are two dipping sauces, a gingery salad dressing and a cream sauce with mild flavor. It was delightful and refreshing. The artichoke was cooked to perfection. They even include the artichoke heart beneath the artichoke whole. Bud by bud, the bottom ends were sweet and tender. They including the hearty soft heart were well accommodated by the sauces.

The second appetizer I ordered was the seafood & salmon sausage. These sausages were formed in patties. They are layered with a piece of smoked salmon and a spoon of lemon butter cream. The patties were soft with great consistency. Not fishy at all. Refreshing! The lemon butter cream, IMO, should be swapped with lemon flavored creme fresh, making the dish lighter.

My main dish there was a lemon better swordfish steak. Again, the fish was hearty, well flavored and not overwhelming. The lemon butter sauce compromised the main course very well. The side vegatable were delicious with the main sauce of the dish. It was very well portioned.

The meal ended with a cappuccino ice cream. The ice cream was light on the coffee flavor. It was milky and sweet like a vanilla latte. The texture was gelato like, it was gooy and sticky but not heavy loaded.

I recommend this place to whom that are looking for a date spot that are looking for well balanced flavor and not wanting to get stuffed and overwhelmed. I'd give this place 3.75/5.00 star. I'd rate them soft, conservative and delightful and a guarantee revisit.
