Travis Pastrana to enter ProRally in 2004
I think this is awesome. Travis Pastrana is one of the few motorcycle/freestyle riders that really has grabbed my attention lately. He recently competed in the Race of the Champions for America, and said he instantly fell in love with rallying. Plus, his car is to be mainained by Vermont Sports Car. Killer combo if you ask me.

OPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 20, 2004) – The Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced today that ESPN Summer X-Games superstar Travis Pastrana will compete in the 2004 SCCA ProRally Championship.
Pastrana, 20, will drive a Production GT class, silver 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX, built by Vermont Sports Car, the same prep shop responsible for the Championship-sweeping vehicles driven by last year’s SCCA ProRally Overall Drivers’ Champion David Higgins and second-place finisher Lauchlin O’Sullivan.
This is the first time Pastrana has ever competed in the SCCA ProRally Championship.
“I am really excited about being involved with a new sport,” said the Annapolis, Md.-native. “I am looking forward to my first race and am also excited for the season ahead.”
Christian Edstrom, O’Sullivan’s co-driver from a year ago, has agreed to be Pastrana’s teammate at Sno*Drift. The two may pair up for more events in the SCCA ProRally Championship, but as of now, Sno*Drift is the only certainty.
“We’re meeting up the weekend of the 24th to have our strategy discussions,” said Edstrom. “We’ll start off nice and steady on Friday and turn up the wick a little on Saturday. The goal is clearly to finish and get as many stage miles as possible under our belts.”
As far as his driver’s potential in rally, Edstrom thinks Pastrana has the tools to do well.
“I think rally and motocross share lots of skills,” said Edstrom. “It’s all about weight transfer, anticipating how much traction is available for cornering versus accelerating and so on.
“I anticipate (Travis) will come up to speed very quickly and have the potential to do very well.”
Pastrana earned national fame competing in various levels of both freestyle and motocross competition from the age of four. He won his first motocross amateur championship in 1992 and since then has won five amateur titles in all. In 1998, Pastrana won the World Freestyle Championship at age 14.
The Sno*Drift ProRally, Round One of the 2004 SCCA ProRally Championship, is set for Jan. 30-31. For more information regarding Sno*Drift, check out www.sno-drift.org.

AWESOME! thats the best news that i've heard regarding SCCA pro rally in a long time. Travis is a great kid, with a great attitude and lots of natural talent. i think that the SCCA will benefit greatly from his involvement, and it'll do a lot to bring rally racing farther into the motorsports mainstream.
time to make sure to set the tivo to records the snow drift rally!

He looked bummed that he wouldn't be able to drive the Pug. This really is good news for ProRally though, with all the negative publicity they've received lately regarding Mitsu and Subaru pulling their open class cars.

Yeah, it seems like he's pretty amped on rally. It's always good to see a well known American star getting into rally. Hopefully it'll lead to more American rally fans
