Tommi retiring, and Burnsie coming back. Personally, I'm not that thrilled by this news. Burns is a good driver, but from all appearances a lousy teammate. He didn't seem to help Petter along at all when he was with the team before, and I doubt he will this time either. I only hope that Tommi stays involved with the team in a non-driving role.

i'm not sure i'd agree with Burns being a lousy team mate. if you look at the teams, there are a lot of team mates that really don't help each other out at all. at Peugot, i don't think that there is much interaction between Burns, Gronholm and Rovanperra at all. for the most part, i think that Subaru is the exception and not the rule when it come to team mates collaborating with each other.

My Richard Burns, is that normal? Seriously, other than an experienced teammate for Petter to talk to, Tommi has brought NOTHING to Subaru. Burns isn't my favorite driver either, and he may not be the best teammate. But he is consistent and he's a very good driver. He's a good addition.

Yes, I agree, Tommi hasn't done much for the team either and Burns has been teammates w/ Petter before so things should go smoothly, not to mention the fact that it doesn't matter much in WRC. Now we just need a 3rd driver.

i wouldn't count on Subaru fielding a third driver for next year, it can be pretty costly. i know the team has a budget, but they've run a two car team for what, the last three years?

Plus, that new third driver rule really throws a spanner in the works for all the teams.

no kidding! what happens if they're third driver scores a podium in the middle of the season? i suppose that by the next season, they'd have to make changes to the driver lineup. i haven't read the new rules closely, but how hard would that be on a team boss? imagine you were ford last year with McRae, Saniz and Martin? what would you do if Martin finished on the box? i know it's not the best example since ford ditched both Sainz and McRae at the end of last season, but it gets you thinking...

Why would money be an issue since the third driver has to be a non-podium finnisher so he should be relavtively cheap compared to other drivers.

i don't think it's so much the cost of a third driver's salary, but the cost of the car, spares, and the mehanics to support the third driver.

WRC teams have huge staffs, i'd guess it probably takes at least twenty or thirty people to support a driver on a multi car team like subaru. you've got the mechanics that work on the car at service, suspension techs, tire techs, data logging people, stage reccy crews, the list just goes on and on. compared to this a third driver's salary isn't that much.

oh yeah, and it's another $80k per gearbox that they break

the subject about a 3rd suby driver was mentioned. david lapworth said, they would like to, and it could happen in this season. all three names mentioned were from the JWRC i think.
that would certainly make sense. the only other place i can think of for them to pull a driver from would be the super 1600 class, which is where Citroen brought Loeb up from.

i think that's what the WRC/FIM are going for with the new rule change. it's hard to get a factory ride in the WRC, but this new rule makes it a lot easier, by encouraging teams to pick up young, up and coming drivers. guys like Miko Hirvonen, and whoever the Mitsubishi driver was last year in Australia that hauled a$$ before crashing out are really going to benefit from this rule.
