Photography advice please

I don't want to interrupt the other photography threads with my question since it's a specific one...

I'm trying to learn how to take colorful pictures like this. I'm trying to capture the bright RED, YELLOW, GREEN, colorful lights at night clubs, but at the same time capture a still image / object. I've tried using a slow shutter speed but I always get a lot of movement / blurry images. Is there a special lens, flash, shutter speed I should be using?

Here are some examples:

you're going to have to use flash. slow sync, so it'll stop the movements. if you aren't steady or your shutter speeds are too slow, you'll probably still get some movement.

Flash for sure. However, I've found that the on-board/built-in flash even on the SLRs make the picture quite dull.

depending on the club venue i will shoot from F2.8 to F3.5 and shutter of 1/6th of a second to 15+. ISO 400. as for my flash i shoot directly at them with a stofen diffuser or use a gary fong.

This is exactly what I'm wanting! By the way, I have a D50 Nikon.

Seems like a stofen diffuser is the most cost effective way to go. What flash do you recommend?

its all trial and error and knowing which settings is good for each venue. Some venues have no light to alot of light. Some venues have fog. it all depends. Its a hard business.

i run the canon 580EX II. for nikons i wouldn't know which flash would work but as long as it has something equivalent to ETTL.
