I've got to hear critique - want to hear what you think of these two images. Please be as thorough as you can, and let me know what you think of these two images.
These, by the way, are straight from the camera - absolutely NO post-production other than Aperture converting the .NEF file into a .jpg file with no input from me on these.
It's important to hear details in this one - Silke and I are at odds about these images.

I'll bite.
The first one has good depth of field, but I'm not really drawn to anything in the frame. The arch in the foreground kind of detracts from the overall scene, and the white balance looks a bit off, too bluish.
Similar thing in the second, I'm left wanting to see more of the table and less of the hearth, or more of the whole room altogether.
I'm a sucker for warmer color temperatures, but I like the second shot better overall, probably due to the Chianti.

Okay, Im game, but I just want you to know I am being honest, and not attacking your work, or making it personal. I know you would do the same for me, if I asked. So here it goes....
I think that both of the images are, quite frankly, a bit boring.
The first one: its framed a bit crookedly, and to me it looks out of focus entirely. The lighting is a bit unbalance, the left side is dark while the right is light, and there is a weird green light thing going on towards the bottom. The edges of the photo have some things poking into it (plants? curtains?) and it just looks uninteresting.
To me it looks more like a snap-shot than a photograph. Does that make sense?
And the second image: while being much better than the first, it still has some weird stuff going on towards the edges and the image still looks a bit out of focus (or has a weird point of focus), though that may be just me. It seems like the napkins aren't in focus, and neither are the objects on the shelf, so you end up focusing on the pillar. It doesnt really have much going on and the wooden pillar cuts the image literally in half.
Please dont take this personally, I am just offering my opinion.

Let's see if cropping and a little editing help. Oh, and getting those evil cats out of the picture? Next to impossible without several layers of work...just remember these are NOT edited or color corrected in any way.

cant really say anything others havent already said, but dont be so proud that you havent done post work. As an artist, it should be your obligation to put forth the best work you can do. These images could be so much better if you take the time to color correct, crop, and enhance.

Roo, I think it was better without the your crop as the top of the arch is creating a tangent with that red bit creeping into frame. I'd suggest either keeping the bricks in frame or making sure it's all the way out of frame, otherwise it's distracting as it creates a point of tension.
Like mmagic - As a professional artist I have no problem with post processing. We do this to ASC cinematographers all the time.
