Project ESP
Project ESP
I said I would in my intro (and I'm REALLY bored at work) so here it is...
Project E Street Prepared
I picked up the car (2002 WRX) in 2005 after taking a job up here in Illinois and getting my "career" off the ground and going. I've always been an autocrosser but my previous car didn't cater to it well (97 maxima gxe auto) and was looking to get back to what I love and for the natural progression to W2W activities. I drove the car for an entire year totally stock and autocrossed in in D Stock during that entire year.

Being the racing addict I am, I can never keep anything stock. So....I picked up some AGX's and ProKits and some new wheels and moved into ESP. I ran two events with just shocks and springs and instantly realized I was nowhere near competitive, even in my relatively small region (we have 5 in ESP; 3 camaros, 1 mustang, and myself). Being the nerd that I am, I whipped out a spreadsheet of parts and the estimated cost. Upon realizing that I was not going to be able to afford to be competitive in ESP and really wanting to move to the divisional circuit as soon as possible, I sought after some help.
After a long time deciding an approach, I managed to land a wonderful sponsorship through Nukabe-Cusco and TurboXS. The spring time of 2007 was quickly disappearing and the mods were constantly being installed in a frantic panic to be ready before the first divisional event. Being the not-so-master installer, I screwed up about half the stuff and had to have the local dealer fix my mistakes. Some of them were simple stuff and others I just flat out fvkd up (like the boost gauge install
). I lived and learned but I still don't claim to know how to do anything other than suspension installs.

I've only got one more local event this year but have got the local region championship in the bag and managed to place 4th out of 17 in the GASS series (great american solo series) my first year out. I also managed to place 5th at the Peru, IN SCCA National Tour in ESP.
I've purchased a tow vehicle and have all but officially retired the WRX from street usage. She sees non-autox surfaces on nice days every now and again. Over the winter, she'll be getting a P&P TD04 turbo, P&P intake manifold, P&P exhaust headers, the Cusco front 1.5 way LSD, a passenger side Corbeau Forza seat, and in the spring she's getting a 100oct tune at P&L in Chicago. If I have enough money left over, I hope to pick up some 17x10.5 CCW classics and some 275/35/17 Hoosier A6s to rap them in. I hope to break the 1.5LG mark at the first of next season.
The car also does a little double duty as a TSD rally vehicle. I don't have any pictures of the homemade light bar I fabricated but I'm pretty happy with the results. It removes in 5 mins thanks to nuts & bolts and a quick connect wiring harness and can switch back and forth between duties as needed. I'm picking up a new camera in the next couple of days so I'm sure I'll have some updated pictures soon.

possibly stiffer springs, especially if I upgrade the rubber.

update: added a front lip and constructed a homemade light bar. Light bar still needs work and some paint but I'm only going to be using it once so I didn't want to invest a ton of money. Whole thing, including the lights and some trial and error pieces, cost me less than $50.

Well, I've got an update; sorta...
The 2008 SCCA Solo National Tour schedule has been leaked and it appears that instead of April being my first event, I'll be making the haul down to Cecil, GA the last weekend in February to run in the National Tour.
So, my off-season just got shortened by just over a month making today the beginning of crunch time! So I've got to set my list of priorities as far as mods go and start working this weekend to get them started. First purchase will be a car hauler for sure, but after that I've got to start looking at time/$ to figure out what will be best for the offseason.
Hope to see some of you SE subies at the tour! The national tours are always great and extremely fun events! Plus, a fellow ESP cusco sponsored car should be at the event too, so we'll get to see who's quicker instead of e-racing! lol!!

2008 Begins!!
UPDATE:
I've managed to land a codriver for the 2008 Dixie National Tour in late February and he's bringing some 17x10 CCWs wrapped in 295/35/17 Hoosier A6s, so I've got to raise the car up about 3/4" to accomidate the monster tires. He's also shipping me some aluminum lower control arms to go on soon. With the tour quickly approaching, it's officially crunch time to get everything done during the off season.
I started in on everything this weekend. Cleaned up the garage, stripped the car down to race trim (removal of trunk stuff), removed the back seat, got the car on stands, pulled out all the rally light bar wiring, loosened the rear lower strut bolts (they're always the toughest), pulled off the hood to make it easier to walk and work around the car, reattached the stock wing, and fixed a dangling tag light (what a pain!).
Next weekend I should have the LCAs so I hope to get the suspension off and regreased where necessary.
Here's a few shots from today:
