Help me decide on parts
Help me decide on parts
Ok, I'm going back to Iraq for a year in December and im giving my car to an old friend who is also a sponsor of my old car. i need help deciding what to put on the car (without getting out of hand, i dont want to spend too much money when i get back because i want to buy a house etc)
He can do pretty much anything and is one of the best welders i have ever seen. he has some experience with EJ20 motors in sandrails. he has made a complete line of turbo kits for hondas, fords, mazdas, and now hes going to use my car to get into the WRX market. he also helped design the frist AEM EMS for turbo mustangs, and is an authorized dealer for AEM, autometer, etc etc.
this is what we have planned already..(and he is going to do all this himself, so no need for upgrade packages or someone elses exhaust or the cobb ap or anything like that)
FMIC
up/downpipe
catback exhaust
AEM EMS
AEM wideband A/F
without drastically changing the car, OR making too much power to where the engine or tranny goes, what else can i add? he is also going to be designing a TMIC more than likely. help me make suggestions because this stuff will be available to everyone once i get back
here is some of his work on mazda protege turbo kits:

Tell him to make something that isn't just like all the other parts we can buy. Thoughts off the top of my head:
1. A hood that has a hidden scoop to feed the TMIC kinda like what it seems like they're doing with the Mazdaspeed 6
2. An UP with some cool fin thingies that makes the turbo spool faster.
Now of course my ideas have no real scientific knowledge in them...I am just BSing and it's almost 10 PM

The common upgrades for a street-driven WRX is IHI VF30 or VF34 turbo (straight bolt-on, latter is ball bearing center section), STi 'pink' injectors, Walbro fuel pump upgrade, full exhaust, and tuning via EcuTek or Cobb Tuning AccessPORT with custom dyno tuning using Cobb ProTUNER. Many tuners use the same basic pieces because it is relatively inexpensive and has shown to be a proven package. These days it's considered fairly conservative as far as engine mods go but remains completely streetable.

right but as i said im not going to buy someone elses exhaust because my friend is going to weld everything from scratch and im not going to use the cobb or ecutek because my friend is also very familiar with the AEM and it is a superior ECU.
i just need to know what to ADD tot he list...so i see the turbo and the injectors and fuel pump.
plus my friend has his own dyno too. so it will be tuned.
what im concerned about is will that make too much power for stock block?
anyhow again, im not going to buy someone elses upgrades. my car is the testbed so we as WRX owners will have even more parts available. i updated the first post cause i dont think it made enough sense to state that
damn i mustve been out of it wheni typed this up.

There are thousands more running an aftermarket turbo (VF series), injectors, fuel pump, and TMIC or FMIC on the stock block. This takes you somewhere near 350hp on 91 octane. Provided your tuner knows what he is doing and your A/F's are nice and rich (I like 10.5 or 11:1) your block will do fine.
It's when you start pushing 20+psi on custom turbos with custom fueling and higher octanes that you start reaching the limits of the stock block.
That being said, and realizing you are getting all of this stuff at a very low price, I would suggest waiting on the FMIC. You will lose torque and power running that on the stock turbo. Your spool up time will be seriously hampered as well. There is no benefit from running a FMIC with a stock turbo - you just aren't flowing enough air for it to make a positive impact. Even with a VF30 or 34, I've seen cars lose torque after switching to a FMIC. Depending on your use for the car, the FMIC may be a good choice, but definitely not on the stock turbo.
Report back to us on the AEM ECU's performance. I don't think there are many folks out there running this on a Subaru.
