Debadge tutorial.....and my 02 WRX =]
Hey all,
I searched the site for info on how to debadge my new, (as of last Wednesday) 02 WRX and came up with some great info.
Unfortunately, I am kind of a slow kid and I seem to need pictures when it comes to any kind of mod, but I figured I would give her a go and take some pics while doing so, as to help other slow kids like myself =].
Materials needed:
1). Hairdryer
2). Fishing line, (go with something like a 17 lb test as I used 4lb and a 10 lb and had breakage often).
3). Megiuars Deep crystal system paint cleaner.
4). Clean terry cloth towel.
Note: I did buy some goo-gone and was going to use it, until I started taking off the first badge. Once the adhesive behind the badge was warm, it was so easy to peel off I never needed the goo-gone at all.

Step #1
Heat the WRX and Imprezza badge at the bottom left of the hatch. It is already cold up here in Toronto and my car was very cool inside my garage. I took the hairdryer and heated the whole "WRX" area for a good 2 minutes.
Step #2
Once I felt that the area was warm enough, I roped my fishing line behind the "X" and started the sawing motion. The adhesive seemed to respond to the heat really well and was fairly easy to cut through. The X took about 45 seconds to get through.
I thought I was done and had my first letter down, but I was wrong as the RX in WRX are one piece. Those are the only two that are connected though, so no big deal. It took about 45 seconds sawing for each letter.

Step #3
Once all the letters were sawed off, there was adhesive left behind in the pattern of the letter.
This worked out well as I just took my hairdryer and went over the adhesive again which really helped to make the residue more pliable and easier to roll and peel off. This is why I didn't need the Goo-gone.
Step#4
As you can see in the picture, there is a bit of a ghost left after the large chunks of adhesive have been peeled off. This is when I busted out the Meguiars crystal paint cleaner and gave the hatch a good layer, then let it dry for about 5 minutes.

Step #5
After letting the Meguiars haze up and dry, I gave the hatch a good rub down with a clean terry cloth towel. This removed all of the ghosting and helped blend the paint together. Some elbow grease was needed for some of the adhesive but it really was not hard at all.
I have not yet finished the full 3 step polishing system, (I hope to get her done this weekend) yet but I did take some pics while I went to go grab a pizza from around the corner. The pics are kind of fuzzy due to the fact that we had a wind storm up here last night.
Anyways,
I think that is pretty much it and here are some pics of the finished debadge and my new WRX.
Mod #1 down!

HAha...the modding bug has already gotcha, eh? You just bought this like a week or so ago! It looks very nice, though. Good job! I like it when people take the "Subaru" and "WRX" badging off...that's how my 03 wagon is. Most kids leave the "WRX" on there for some odd reason. Are your intentions to make a sleeper out of this, or you just wanted to clear up the rearend?

I was making a list of the mods I want to do while the car was idleing after my test drive =]
I owned a 2002 2.5 TS that I traded in on the WRX, so this is my second suby. I left the 2.5 stock the whole time I had her, I don't know why but now I am kind of getting the mod bug again after my del sol a few years ago.
As far as future plans, I want some bronze rota subzeros, Koji headlight mod, catback, alarm and turbo timer.
