ADizon's Bugeye Toonz

Hey folks,

So I've been a fan of Huck Gee's, Love Craig Woida's, Scott Robertson's, & Daniel Simon's work to name a few. All these guys have a passion for both art and Cars. I too share this passion, but rarely get the time to express it. This is one of those rare moments, a small window of time quickly fading as my next "work" project is just around the corner. To utilize this opportunity I have chosen to do a caricature of my 02 Bugeye Sedan. I have always thought about it, but have done nothing till now. So far I've got about a full days work in. Need more to finish!

I am using a good ole pencil & Photoshop as I don't have Illustrator.

Please be patient, as it will take several posts to finish this project. Enjoy!

Here is what my car looks like for those who don't know it.

So the first step for me is to come up with a drawing deciding on compostion, and asking myself what single angle would best represent my Rex?

Next I did initial blocking in and layed in photos of the SVN's (courtesy of Joe aka Wheeldude). I did this to give me a feel for general light source. Also ends up that there wasn't too much distortion in laying in the wheels and they seem to hold up.

Refining paint, trying to pull out distinctive shapes of the bugeye through light and shadow. This project has been particularly challenging as my car is metallic silver, so there's not a lot of high contrast gloss to give it an immediate "punch". It is a balance of working within the value range to give it some detail.

Here I start to pull out the line drawing so that the paint work does most of the defining of the shapes.

Stay tuned for the next segment!

So here is some more refinements. Added the lights, and starting to paint in more to get rid of the pencil drawing: I'd say I'm about 75% done. Still got a lot to clean up and fill in!

Update 4/6

more refinement adding higher frequency reflections to paint, also cleaned up some areas that were mushy . . . still have more to fix, but here's where it's at:

Update 4/7
Almost finished , added brakes more reflection refinement, more clean-up. Added details to how I want my car to be like in the near future, cleared headlights, JDM sideblinkers, yellowed fogs. Still have a little more cleaning up to do, man I can noodle this thing to death!

Actually the pos. camber you guys are referring too is actually supposed to look like the wheel is turned. I need to add a tiny bit of shadow as if the wheel is turning into the fender well. Maybe I'll add a tie on the other side to emphasize that the wheels are turned in a bit!

Segment 2 is up!!!! See post 2

Thanks for the compliments guys!

wrxtunerd: at the moment I'm just doin this for myself, an experiment really. For freelance work I usually would charge $50 -$100/hr depending on the client and what it is I'm doing. This would be too expensive for most. Outside of that I would be losing money.

Still have more to do to finish this thing! Enjoy!
