'70 Beetle

I acquired this car about 2 years ago. My father said "Son, I am moving to Texas and I cannot take everything with me. If you can tow this car from my house it is yours to keep." Not wanting to pass up a free car I bribed a friend to help me tow it. The car looked like it was sitting in the mud for years (I honestly think he got drunk and decided to get nutty in the mud and just left it).

As soon as I got the car home I took these pictures. A few days later I began tearing it apart just trying to clean it up. I found the biggest nest of wood ants I have ever seen underneath the sound insulation and hood liner. There were thousands of them, about an inch long. I have never screamed that loud in my life.

This is before I found the ants:

These are the rest of the pics I took. The body is actually in great shape, there is very minor rust:

This is the "after":
Replaced the old engine with a new 1600 dual port (the old one was a single port). I am still installing the dual carb setup. I will be using Solex 34 PDSIT carbs from a Bus. The stock mechanical fuel pump puts out 3 psi of fuel pressure. These carbs will only work with 1.5 - 2 psi of pressure. I just need to figure out where to mount he regulator and gauge.

New fuel tank and cleaned up trunk. I removed the stereo and all of the heat/defrost system. The new engine does not have any heater boxes.

Dash without the pad and stereo. Everything electrical still works perfectly. Oh, and new "seat cover".

Cleaned up interior. There was not much I could do without a sander. All I had to work with was a wire brush and shop vac.

I sprayed the entire car with Home Defense spray. I waited a week to vacuum out all of the ants.

*New pics*

Ummmm.....

I put on the dual carbs and fuel regulator yesterday! Tonight I will probably tune the carbs and go for a test drive. I have never tuned dual carbs before and I am a bit nervous.

Timing will be set at 28 degrees full advance. I will set the mixture a tad rich to try and keep the temps down. After a full tank of gas has been used I will calculate the mileage and change jets accordingly. After that the oil gets changed and valves will be adjusted.

More pics added soon.

Awesome...the car looked pretty good from the before pics.

You should've used one of those bomb thingies and just set it off in the car to kill the ants. LOL

What's the entire scope of this project? Just to get it running or to totally do it up with a restoration and such? Or are you gonna turn it into your racer?

My focus on the car is just to make a reliable transporter. I never really wanted this thing in the first place and had no desire to ever own a bug...but who can pass up a free car?

Now, the more I work on the car the more excited I get about it. I guess its just seeing that my work is paying off.

When I first began the work I wanted to build a track car (don't laugh, these cars can be track terrors). I got a lot of inspiration from www.germanlook.com and especially www.ne.jp/asahi/jeffreys/vw/ Although, my car has a front beam, and most competitive type 1s have front struts. So, I see no point. My car will just be a cheap, reliable second car.

Just for kicks, here are some examples of some of the most bad-*** bugs I have seen:
