nope.

its the coolant expansion tank. aka the burp tank.

 

Actually subaru calls it the coolant filler tank.

It's not the resavoir / overflow tank, which is what you've just described.

 

ummm... no, thats not what i described, but thanks for playing.

the reason i said 'burp tank' is that, you fill the car from there while its idling. Thus 'burping' all the air from the system.... From the highest point in the cooling system.
