Not 100% sure, I remember something weird that the 17's did but the 18's did not, not sure if the subzeros. That was a long time ago and I never ran these on my current bbk setup since I never got around to painting them. I just figure for this cheap a price you'd have a matching set if you rattle canned them or plastidipped them. Or if you had them professionally painted (Cosmic says don't heat them up) you'd have as good as new for about $600 or less. Regarding your original question, maybe only 2-3mm is nec to clear.
