What car are the chains/cables going on? From what I understand Subaru does not recommend.I have two sets of cables in my shed I'll take a look see if still there and what size it will fit on.

If you have a Subaru with Winter Tires you don't need Chains. The Chain Check will waive you right on through.

you legally have to "have them inside your car" tho

even if they don't need to be used on the tires

So I think you're right about subarus not needing it due to the AWD lol. But its going on my 09 impreza hatch. If what Recuer is saying is true though, then i should definitely at least just have them present in the car. I dont have winter tires though, wonder if that will make a difference?

Went in my buddies Wrx last year they made us put chains on even though we had winter tires. Awd and winter tires don't make you impervious to the snow just sayin....

Do the cables work Ok for the WRX? This is my first winter with my subie and I was worried about the clearance because of the official Subaru stance on chains but have you had success with cables? All 4 tires I assume?

Cables never worked for **** in my old rallifart. But it was a mitsu..

It worked on my friends wrx but he was lifted about a half inch. I Say cable cause if a chain breaks that's heavy peices of metal hitting your fenders seen it happen on an explorer one year dents everywhere!

it is true.... there is a code for it. you just have to "carry" them in your vehicle. now, you can always take your chances to not get caught of course. there are plenty of stories of AWD people never getting inspected for it, and stories where people did.

you'll see it noted as " All vehicles, including four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices upon entering a chain control area."

I've never been inspected for it, but I have always carried them. if I remember correctly there is a condition in which you have to have m+s tires or 4wd/awd, and the one level up from that is m+s tires and 4wd/awd and chains. I don't think cheaping out and not having a $20 set of chains is worth it. (when I say chains, I mean cables)
