Let me just begin by saying that this car has a lot going for it, and I'd love to keep it, but I can't, so here I am. It has a bad auto tranny, and I don’t have a place to fix it, so I’m going to attempt to sell the car as-is. The transaxle is the ONLY major problem with the car. It has a bad high reverse clutch, I think, because 3rd gear and reverse don’t work at all. The car has 204,000 miles on it, so obviously, it is not going to be perfect. The air conditioning desperately needs to be recharged, but since the car was made in the 80's, it uses R-12 which is bloody expensive, and I haven't driven the car in the summer, so I haven't really been motivated to retrofit. Aside from that and a torn CV boot (which I might even fix if I get a decent offer), the car is in excellent condition inside and out, and purrs like a kitten. Since the tranny is bad, I have no way of smogging it, but once that’s fixed the car should pass. I had it on a 4-gas analyzer before the tranny died and it was within specs. For a car made in 1986, it has a hell of a lot of cool options, and everything works. Power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and a power sunroof. It has recently had a very, very thorough tune-up and runs like a brand new car. The car drives straight down the road with no pulls or shimmies. I also replaced the following parts with brand new replacement components that were either OEM Subaru parts, or direct aftermarket OEM style replacement parts:
175/70-13 Kumho PowerStar 758 tires
NGK Spark plugs
OEM Subaru spark plug wires
Air filter
Fuel filter
Valve cover gaskets
Distributor cap
Distributor rotor
Alternator belt
OEM Subaru Timing belts
New battery (can't remember the brand)
The car has undergone some serious cleaning, and it looks impressive if I do say so myself. I would rate the interior a 7.5 out of 10. It has some minor fading on the head rests of the back seat, and the drivers seat has a small cigarette burn in it that has been there since I’ve owned the car. There are two tiny stone chips on the passenger side of the windshield, and some rock chips on the A-pillars and hood, but overall, it’s pretty clean. The outside of the car is light blue, the inside is blue, and it has alloy wheels. The car has been driven less than 200 miles since all of those parts were installed, so with some TLC, it would make a wonderful daily driver. I still need to take pictures of it, so if anyone is interested, I'll be more motivated to go take some. I have to sell it ASAP because my landlord is getting on my case about taking up 2 parking spaces, so I will entertain any REASONABLE offers. I'm hoping for like...$750ish or a trade for wheels.
Edit: I forgot to add that the car has an EA82 in it. EA82's are 1.8 liters with about 95 horsepower (the turbo models had 115 HP, but this one is SPFI and naturally aspirated). It's very, very easy to work on, and the spare tire is under the hood. This particular car is FWD and has a 3 speed automatic, but since the tranny is bad, it would be a good opportunity to convert. GL-10's came with 4WD manual trannies, and they're easy to find and easy to convert. Donor cars can be found for $200 or less and everything (tranny, diff, driveshaft, crossmember, rear trailing arms, springs, struts and a few more small things) is a direct bolt-on. I would have done the conversion if I could actually keep the car, but I can't.
I hope there's someone on I-Club who loves these cars as much as I do.
