No worries, basically a stand-alone replaces your stock ECU (computer) for a different unit where as most tuning is done through the stock ECU but with software to pull the ROM (files). Cobb AccessPort and EcuTek are examples of software that allow a tuner to remove your ROM (files) from your stock ECU, make adjustments and then flash them back on.

w00t! So now you can justify with your wife spending the money, right...? So now you can do upgrades and just tell your wife you are "smoothing" it out
