What things can you do?
Suspension, wheels/tires, and that's about it. If you are really hardcore, you can consider a WRX swap. There is no cost efficient way to pull more power out of NA. You do have an option of an aftermarket turbo kit for a 2.5RS, but keep in mind that you won't be able to boost more than 5 or 6 psi safely.

its not turbo just tryin to get something to handle and drive nicely while lookin sharp, i considered turbo but with the mileage it would be a waste, i would just have to overhaul the complete engine...which is way outta my budget

If i had the money i would, i'm only 16, i'm going to skewl full time and workin at Wal*Mart....a complete revamp is outta the question...i am wondering however if i should go with a supercharger compared to a turbo? i like the fact that you don't have to wait for a supercharger to wind-up

I wouldn't put a turbo OR a supercharger on a NA engine. I've read about a few and results were not great -- if nothing else, reliability was a problem.
Now that it's easy to get a turbo motor, you're much better off going that route. Sure the turbo kit is cheaper in the beginning, but if your motor only lasts 30,000 miles....
Instead of power, I'd go for suspension mods...
My $0.02 =)

i hate to say it... but it's waste of money on power mods on that car. you'll never achieve the kind of power you want. instead, I say spend all your money on suspension mods, brakes, tires, and track day.

Yeah, what StupidDent says. There is no cost-effective way to pull more power out of your L. Trust me, I would know. Do a few suspension things and learn to drive. That'll benefit you the most.
worth it? i think that's a question for yourself. As in, do you have the money for it? Are you driving this 96 impreza because it's body style or just because it's an impreza? If you just want a subaru, the price tag to do a full swap would come very close to buying an used 02 wrx if you sell your car as well.
to me, it's not worth the money, so I am not doing it. and the only reason i would want to do a swap on my 00rs would be because i love the body style and i love the power. however, if I do swap, I would swap STi not WRX. and for the money I would put in for a full STi swap and money I can get for my 00rs. I would sell my 00rs and buy an used STi. but there are plenty of people have done it and have never been happier.
