Mixed information on the good/bad aspect. From what I can tell, it helps with the intake resonance as well as makes it quieter.
I took mine off and haven't noticed anything positive of negative. (The intake could be louder, but my exhaust is too loud to tell.) I did notice however that with it removed, there is now two big holes going into the airbox. Thus creating more airflow.
But like I said, as far as I know, only the N/A and STi engines have these silencers. The WRXs (and maybe GTs) don't have this, the hole is there but it is sealed.
