having owned my STi and my girls EVO IX MR I can say the evo is the easier to modify car. its also easier to drive and has MUCH MUCH better throttle repsonse
the stock turbo/FMIC is already very strong but the tranny is weak compared to the STi.
I see it as a fine carving knife that takes very little skill to drive quickly but becomes boring because it involves little driver effort.
My STi on the other hand is more fun to drive around. The 2.5l disp has more low end grunt off boost but quickly turns into a violent thrust as the boost builds. Its more of a blunt instrument pounding the pavement into submission.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd still by my Suby in a heart beat.

The 2007 Subaru STi no question.
The STi is a excellent vehicle all around.
Also Subaru has better resale value than Mitsubishi.

From what I've heard STi's remain better on the street and Evo's better for the track. I'd go with the STi, and then I'd sell it and get an 08 STi
