I'm a local in the small town of Putnam. Here's my story:
I've decided to test out a Subura this year. Not just any Subaru.. But a 1994 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon Edition. It's old, and will get the "works" done.. once I figure out some Subaru dealerships around my area. I use the internet quite often, so if ya'll know any performance subaru sites, let me know. Basically, this car is crap. The engine has a steady leak all around the oil pan, knocking sounds, shot fuel injector, and did i mention the oil leak? Ultimately a new engine. I'm thinking newer engine, less miles and more horses behind it all... Any other ideas on that, let me know. As of right now, stock, the subaru runs saddly, but it's got some dignity on it.. it kicks the hell out of civics (stock, of course) and mazdas.
Also, would the fact that it's AWD hold back on performance? Many of you will not take me seriously, but I hope the common writers will lend a hand or two in this 'project'... I know somewhat what I am doing, seeing as last year, I fixed and maxxed a '88 VW Golf GL...
Here is my ultimate dream: I've set a crash date for January 20, 2005 for this car to be completely repaired in order for WEST COAST CUSTOMS in California to pick it up, and maxx it out. This car is a present for my fiancee on for our anniversary in March. She loves Subaru's. She picked this car out herself.
Here is the stats:
CAR: 1994 Subaru Legacy Wagon GT
Color: Faded Dark Blue w/ Primer spots in the front panels
Condition: Stock and in sad shape
Cost of car: $0.00 - bartered it with a Mass. dealership, selling my Olds. Achieva
The store I'll be using for parts is NAPA, unless you all suggest a better place.
Now for the problems:
Oil Pan - leaks about a half quart to a quart a day
Oil Pan Gasket - Main problem; completely cracked
Brake Master Cylinder - leaks; broken
Thermostat - stuck; refuses to open overheating the engine
Spark Plugs and Wires - cracked; stripped
Exhaust System - completely shot; leaks; rusted; no catalytic converter
Oxygen Sensor - malfunctioning
Fuel Sensor - malfunctioning
Front axle - broken c.v. joints
Braking system - scarred rotors; no front brake pads; rear brakes lock when wet
Fuel Injector - dead
Tires - bald; weather worn
Belts - cracked; torn; weather worn
Suspension - leaks; broken struts
Radio - malfunctions when the windshield wipers are on; sound fades out
Rear Hatch - broken handle spring; shuts improperly
Driver Tail Light - flooded with water; bulbs blown; corroded shut
Electric Auto Starter - missing keyring device; generic brand is outdated
Rust - surprisingly... none... now anyways, covered with bondo and primer
Total cost for those parts are costing me: $801.58, with a ton of core deposits.
I know many of you are thinking, "what's the point? just get a newer car for her."
Well, here's my response: This is my job... my hobby. I enjoy fixing cars. I make more profit out of the satisfaction of 'MY WORK' then of the money that I make selling these off.
So that's it.. If you have suggestions or comments; I am all ears.

I'd suggest the people at Premier Subaru in Branford, I got my Sube there and they were amazing. I bet they could help you with getting genuine Sube parts and offering advice or whatever. Just a thought...I travelled all the way there to get my car from Fairfield and it was worth it.
How did you "maxx out" the VW? Maintaining a older beaten Subaru will be a big drain on your wallet if you're using the dealership for service. Get the service manual and start researching the Subaru forums for solutions to your problems.

Um.. You have an EJ22 2.2 in your Legacy ?
Basically all you need is to yank a WRX 2.0 liter from a totaled Subaru and rig up some sort of aftermarket boost controller. Your stock crossmember should be fine. Also while you are at it, maybe drop in a decent aftermarket clutch assembly and upgrade the brakes with WRX parts and do over the suspension. Oh and maybe install the WRX seats.
All you'll need is money for a totalled WRX, time and/or money to install all this stuff, and a little technical expertice.
Posting some before and after photographs would be really nice.
