GuY's iTV & A/V Review

Apple's newest toy that may have been overshadowed by iPhone
Its neat that its wireless (if you've already got a wireless card
in your computer) and can store 40gb but for asking $300 and only
outputs a 640 X 480 resolution is to much. Anything from itunes is
that format or about the same for widescreen. A dvd would look better
and cost you only $5 more in the case of CARS. I picked up real dvds
from Newburry Comics: Xfiles Movie, War of the Worlds and Van Helsing
for $18 total and will look boatloads better than anything from
itunes. High def is 1920 X 1080. For $80 you can get dvds to look even
better with an up converter that outputs 720p from component and 1080i
from hdmi. Denon and Yamaha is also making 1080p up converters but are
similar in cost to the blue ray players which also have that ability
and will play actual 1080p BLR dvds which WILL look better than an up
converted 1080p signal.
Wiring is cheap and most of the time can find a way to hide them.
You can buy a VGA splitter for less than $10 and get an extra vga for
something maybe $20 depending on length and still use the apple remote
w/ "Front Row" plus getting the full capability of using your tv
instead of monitor, not just for movies and photos.(If your tv is PC
capable). You may get a brighter color using component cables and in
that case use your dvd player not your computer.
Hardwire is always more reliable and like CAT5 internet cable has a
great transfer rate. 100mbps. Today's cards are 56 which is fine for
internet but if you're transferring between things, computer, xbox you
can get things twice as fast. With new high def quality technology
everything is taking up more space. For instance itunes movie 400mb,
even widescreen version 1400mb, actual movie on dvd 4000mb. HD movies
even more.
My opinion is its another neat apple toy and if you've invested
alot in itunes video than it would be very cool. I just dont see why
anyone who has spent the money for a high def screen wouldnt spend the
little extra money sometime less for actual dvds or the HD dvds to get
the better quality, unless they are on house arrest and dont like to
purchase from ebay. In that case you may want to spend your money on
a new lawyer instead of buying new A/V equipment. My 2 €

[Apple] FOREVER!

Look for my next review on Yamahas new RXV1700 Receiver and YDS - 10 ipod dock.
