ECU tuning
I am currently in a dilemma. I want to upgrade my stock ECU. I dont know whether I want to send it to COBB or get a UTEC or buy a used UNICHIP. UNICHIP is the cheapest of all, but I been hearing that the UNICHIP isnt any better than our stock ECU's. I have a 2003 wrx with turboback exhaust, IC hoses, MBC, K&N air filter, BOV, and the air box removed. What do you guys think I should do. I been searching on I-Club and NASIOC for hours now and I cant come to a decision. THanks. If i choose to get a UTEC, I will be getting work done at XXTuning.

I spoke to COBB before I sent mine to Vishnu for a reflash. At that time they told me they would not reflash any ECU for a car that did not have a stock airbox (other than a new K&N flat panel filter add-on). Don't know much about the UTEC. I like my Vishnu ECUTek reflash very much. Good luck.

i am also in the same boat
I am leaning to cobb to reflash mine. I have removed the snorkus, k and n air filter drop in and turbo xs axle back for now. Money is limited but my next mod will be a reflash. I am impressed with cobbs dyno numbers on 91 octane and 5hp higher if u use 93octane. For $400 dollars you cant go wrong for those kind of gains.
Everything i have read and heard says the stock ecu from subaru is hell of a good unit. but there is potential for even more reliable hp to get. piggy back systems depending on which u get sometimes conflicts with the stock ecu. If the piggy back is saying to increase boost and air/f uel the ecu may try to conteract it. But if you reflash the stock ecu , the parameters are ther for good and wont be going back and forth.
Therefore unless i hear of something better this winter i plan on sending my ecu out to cobb for their reflash . I hope this helps a little.

I just got the Cobb Stage 1 a few weeks ago. Super easy install, can't beat the price. I have a stock 03 WRX. I went with the 93 octane map. They say you gain 33hp. From 227 to 260hp.
My impressions so far are relatively positive. It feels faster but I have to admit I wasn't blown away. It's most likely because the car is pretty much brand new, only 3k miles and I wasn't exactly getting bored with the stock power yet, nor was I that use to it. From what I can tell, the car feels a bit stronger on the low end and the kick from the boost feels stronger as well. I have a boost gauge and at WOT is hits 15lbs of boost. They say 14.7 so it's close enough. One thing I did notice was when cruising on the highway, 5th gear feels more like what 4th use to be.
I know stage 2 gives more HP but I'll have to wait until I get a turbo back.
I too spent hours trying to decide whether or not to get the utec or just a reflash. I figured I'd get the reflash and spend the extra on an exhaust.
Hope this helps
