some do.. after my situation i upgraded my surge protector to a monster cable one.. it can actually detect a surge before it happens and it will shut down prior to the surge happening.. they also have something like a million dollar protection policy if their surge protector fails.. lol.. i was saying to myself, "man i hope my fails and the flatscreen goes out again cause then im a millionaire.." lmao

I run everything important on surge protectors. Kyle's right, obviously UPS are the best because there is no power loss but I'm not sure how they react to a surge...
I've been on many service calls to people complaining of their appliances going out due to surges and we can only tell them to contact PG&E. I've never heard of PG&E actually paying people back for them though. There too big of a corporation I feel.
On a good note, rain doesn't seem to be very substantial...

its been a good three weeks of bad surges. in that time we have lost two tvs and four dish network receivers in one surge, another tv and a garage door opener on the second, and the last big one claimed another tv, my xbox, four dish receivers, the upstairs heater, a computer, a refrigerator, wine cooler, a few lightbulbs, and all the surge protectors that were plugged in. some saved the appliances, others didnt. we had other smaller ones that just flickered the lights or super powered tham but that was about it
we called six times after bigger surges and they came out five of those times. every time until the last one they said it was our houses wiring, so we proceeded and hired electricians, two of them.
the first couldn't find an issue so he pretty much quit after the fourth time we called him over. the second one was able to fix an issue, but it wasn't really related to the whole house having troubles, just one room. so he told us to call pg&e again. they came over and installed some sort of amp thing to measure what the house was taking in, and said they would return for it in a week.
fast forward to yesterday when my dad got to his business and had two missed calls and voice-mails. both from pg&e. one said that they had found the problem and that they were going to fix it between such ans such time. the second one was a conformation that it was some kind of negative or neutral thing that had come loose on their side and that the problem had been corrected. my dad called and the lady said she was sorry and was going to send us a form to fill out for compensation.
cliffnotes:
lights go flash
stuff goes boom
i have no xbox
