Anticipating the 5th annual Redwood Rendezvous Road Rally Adventure tour/campout

September 29,30 and for those that can take a couple more days off, a special extension rally tour with rented lookout for Monday and Tuesday, and yes, as usual- I've got some sick ideas for where to go...

ENTRIES ARE CLOSED

The list for this year:

hp
Dr Tofu
eastbaysubaru
Rallywagon
bushido
JeffS
EQ Tuning

So 7 entrants is a new record for this event.

The rest of you are losers and you all know it. :D

I'm pretty sure I have enough various rally timers.....but if anyone has a palm pilot, be sure to talk to me before the 29th...

Blue TRex 07-20-2007 05:33 PM

Dang 5th annual?? where have I been. I've driven Redwood a couple times, but only once in my subie. I stoped going because everytime I went, there were cops.

So please explain to this noob how this event works....We camp there and do some runs on the roads? I just dont wana get pulled over by the cops for reckless driving, speeding, etc. etc.....Im interested just never heard about it.
And it depends on which weekend..

alex8 07-20-2007 05:46 PM

Finally!
I'm in, but not in the 2nd half of august please.
How far are you planning to go this time?

psoper 07-20-2007 06:24 PM

For those unfamiliar with the concept, the "rally" portions consist of short sections with assigned legal speeds where the goal is to maintain that speed through the section.
Everyone will start on 2 minute intervals and stop to man a checkpoint somewhere on the section, timing the other cars as they drive by, then following up 2 minutes behind the last car.
The goal being to pass the checkpoints "on time" you get points for being early or late.

Whoever finishes with the fewest points wins (mostly bragging rights, no trophy's or anything) but then we all wind up at a campsite for dinner and libations, and depending on the severity of everyone's hangover, we do some more driving on Sunday before heading home.

The route this year will consist of both paved and unpaved roads, and the timeline is looking like sometime in the late september / early October range.

MS streets and trips says its 270 miles on the most direct route from Berkeley to the Campground, about 5 and a half hours...

but we won't take the most direct route.

More info will be posted as the time draws nearer

psoper 07-20-2007 06:37 PM

I've bumped a few threads from previous events for you guys to ponder, and the original one ran before we had this meets and events forum

gotwrx 07-20-2007 06:38 PM

Hope I can make it this year. The nav unit is off to college. His exams and such were why I didn't make the last two. Now he won't be avaialble so I'll have to work on the 2nd unit and see if she's up for it.
Tim

eastbaysubaru 07-22-2007 11:38 PM

In.

-Brian

drtofu 07-24-2007 01:39 AM

Barring injury, I'm in

psoper 07-24-2007 08:52 PM

I'm thinking the last weekend in September, so that would be what, the 29,30.

Is that going to work for you guys?

RallyWagon 07-24-2007 09:20 PM

Yes, I'm in and Sept 29/30 would work perfectly with my current schedule.

drtofu 07-24-2007 09:55 PM

Any of the last three weekends in Sept works for me.

Note that Sept 30 is the FRX Antioch Rallycross.

alex8 07-24-2007 10:58 PM
Note that Sept 30 is the FRX Antioch Rallycross.
Because of the above, I'd prefer some other weekend.

eastbaysubaru 07-25-2007 01:42 AM

This sh1t's much more fun than a RallyX so any date will work for me although I'd like to see as little conflict with other rally venues.

-Brian
Because of the above, I'd prefer some other weekend.
Well I have to say I'm sorry, but my schedule doesn't allow any other date.

drtofu 07-25-2007 04:11 PM

Rendezvous takes priority over rallycross for me

eastbaysubaru 08-03-2007 09:26 PM

Bumpitty bump for August updates! Pete??? :)

-Brian

wrexr 08-03-2007 11:44 PM

Hmm, might have to stretch the legs on the outback and run clean-up for the rally.

-Kevin

eastbaysubaru 08-04-2007 11:43 AM

Outback's need their legs stretched too! :) I'll probably be a little lower to the ground by then, but since it's a Forester, it'll just be regular car height. ;)

-Brian

hp 08-05-2007 11:03 PM

im in too no more wrx but ill bring the L

eastbaysubaru 08-06-2007 09:48 AM

It's like a ghost town in here. What happened to the wrx?

-Brian

hp 08-06-2007 01:10 PM

just got tired of it I have a 93 l 5 speed awd I wanna buy a forester xt 06 or newer

eastbaysubaru 08-08-2007 10:23 AM

Cool. At least you're still rockin' a Suby.

Pete, any updates?

-Brian

hp 08-10-2007 05:24 PM

yap yap any updates can't wait to get in the dirt again

eastbaysubaru 08-10-2007 06:23 PM

Ditto.

-Brian

psoper 08-10-2007 09:22 PM

Well I don't know what to tell ya, right yet, I'm thinking a 8:00 AM departure from Washoe House on Saturday September 29.

Bring camping gear, full sized spare, and be ready to rally!

hp 08-11-2007 03:42 PM

OOOOO sounds good to me

eastbaysubaru 08-11-2007 10:48 PM

Word Pete! Glad to see you around these parts :D

-Brian

bushido 08-12-2007 07:32 AM

Alright my rally friends, Pete gave me a call and said he had started a tread about the RRR.
Yes of course i'm in. Haven't changed out my tires (to dirt) since last falls final dirt drive, where i had my off. Looking forward to it. Even if it's not involving as much dirt. I love the camping part the best.

-rich

eastbaysubaru 08-12-2007 09:16 AM

Why on earth would there be less dirt?

-Brian

psoper 08-12-2007 10:58 AM

Don't worry there should be plenty of dirt, I'm just reverting to the "TSD sections on paved" format that the first couple of events ran under.

But still lots of unpaved miles on the route

eastbaysubaru 08-12-2007 12:10 PM

:(

-Brian ;)

bushido 08-12-2007 04:44 PM

Oh, man i can't wait. Haven't done ANY i-club/car events in months.
The i-club just hasn't been doing it for me lately.

eastbaysubaru 08-12-2007 05:44 PM

Me neither. This is going to be a blast!

-Brian

hp 08-18-2007 11:35 AM

haha same here +1 for the dirt

RallyWagon 08-18-2007 05:43 PM

This is INKED in on my calendar!

eastbaysubaru 08-18-2007 07:32 PM

Yeah, everyone's showing up as we get closer to go time :D

-Brian

RallyWagon 08-18-2007 08:19 PM

See post # 10 ... ;)

For some reason I only get random email notification since I-Club moved to the new server or whatever. :( Last notice I got was after your post on 8/10/07. This thread has been busy since then.

Glad to see so many old familiar faces coming out of the woodwork for this rally / campout! :)

bushido 08-18-2007 09:44 PM

Hi drtofu, it's 9:55 and we're both looking at the same thread :)
Weather or not we're on a lot of dirt. One things for sure, it'll be an awesome route.

Almost time to pull out the yellow wheels.

-rich

drtofu 08-18-2007 09:45 PM

Just got back from the 'thundercross' rallyx up at Thunderhill. Nice to be in the dirt aagin. Looking forward to RRR!

I hope to god for your sake that you were better about using sunscreen than I was, I feel like my head was stuck in a lobster pot, except for my 'coon eyes from the shades.

Did you stick around for Best in Show? I left right at 4

There were a few ugly winners this year I thought, but some really cool ones too.

Gotta love the old Mormon Meteor, now THAT'S a DUSY!

eastbaysubaru 08-19-2007 10:19 PM

I left right after the parade. Yeah, hot as hell today but we sunscreend early and it held up pretty well. It was my first year, but definitely won't be the last.

p.s. Pete, our car will have a palm pilot

psoper 09-01-2007 12:21 PM

Updates? Details?
Man you guys ask for a lot...
Here is all anyone knows right now.

Entries are firmly limited to 10 cars, you are strongly encouraged to have a navigator/co-driver.

If your name is not listed on the beginning of this thread and you are planning to attend- you need to PM me.

Bay area participants will start at the Washoe House north of Petaluma at 8:00 AM on Saturday, anyone wishing to participate coming from anywhere else needs to PM me.

As usual Saturday will finish at a campground.

On Sunday people are free to return home, or I will be taking a couple more days vacation up around Mt Shasta, I have a lookout rented for Monday night and will either camp or grab a hotel room in Yreka or Weed on Sunday night.

If you have any more specific questions, PM me.

Does that help?

psoper 09-03-2007 10:12 PM

Well I went north today, drove 566 miles in 15 and a half hours and found my initially planned route isn't going to work,

Sadly, we aren't going here;

Why you ask?
Because I didn't want to make anybody drive through 10 miles of this;

I know, anyone with a Forester wouldn't mind, but not all of us have foresters...

I still think I got some other stuff that everyone should enjoy.

So did anybody else have any questions or interest in running?

I'll need a final head/car count by about the 15th.

eastbaysubaru 09-04-2007 12:04 AM

What percentage of the route is going to be dirt? If it's primarily tarmac :( then I'd bring different wheels.

-Brian

psoper 09-04-2007 12:09 AM

What I drove today- neglecting the 30 miles of serious off-roading, amounted to only about 8 miles of dirt, but I think I found another 30 miles unpaved loop that I'll look at next weekend.

A LOT of the pavement is broken/rough with gravel sections too...

But I ran the first one on my P-7s and I might wind up that way this year too (the general purpose tires are starting to show strings on the inside shoulders)

drtofu 09-04-2007 12:09 AM

I would so drive through that.

psoper 09-04-2007 12:15 AM

I figured you and Brian White would have been fine, I made it but spent too much time going really slow, (30 miles took over 2 hours, averaging 14 mph) and I definitely used my skid plate- maybe more than a few times.

anyone lowered would not be happy, and anyone taking good care of their car might hate me after....

eastbaysubaru 09-04-2007 12:58 AM

Yeah, -1 for that gnar gnar off roadin'. +1 for more dirt, but I'm in regardless, so whatever you have in mind Pete is fine by me :D It kind of screws with my wheel/tire choice though if we're only going to be doing ~8 miles of dirt.

I love that kind of slow-moving rut-crawling, and that's what the skid-plate's for, right?

Sorry we won't have you along Kevin, a spring fling sounds like a good idea too though, might just have to follow through with that as a plan.

psoper 09-09-2007 01:34 PM

I'll put you in the maybe category then.

It has been written for 10 cars, so we have spots for a few more people.

Let me know by Friday because that's going to be the latest I'll allow anyone else to enter.

eastbaysubaru 09-09-2007 01:42 PM

I think I need a third set of wheels/tires. Something better for dirt/tarmac combo weekends. Definitely don't want to wear through the snows driving quickly on twisty tarmac, but don't want to destroy the 18's on the dirt. Maybe I'll steal my wife's RS wheels with G009's on them for that weekend. Hehehe...

-Brian

psoper 09-09-2007 09:37 PM

I'm trying to keep it "17" happy" for Jane- and I think maybe even me, my 16" tires are showing threads- but I don't know about your ghetto-baller 18's.

JeffS 09-10-2007 10:10 AM

Sounds like a lot of planning etc. Any entry fee?

I have never done anything like this but it sounds like blast. Would I be fine on stock rims and newer all-seasons? I am not worried too much about performance, etc. just survival. If so, I will need to pick up a stock 02-04 wheel and tire from someone for cheap to use as a spare.

Counting on all this, I am in for the 29th.

drtofu 09-10-2007 10:25 AM

I've got full sized spares with old RE92s and '02 stocker rims -- $50 each. If you'd like one, let me know and I can bring it up.

psoper 09-10-2007 11:08 AM
Sounds like a lot of planning etc. Any entry fee?
Thanks for recognizing that, it is pretty involved, two or three pre-check trips mean I drive over a thousand miles before anyone even gets to the start.

You'll need $5 for entry to the Drive Thru Tree, also the campsites are $8.

Also figure on starting with a full tank of gas, filling up again 90+ miles out in Willits (premium was still less than 3.10/gal on Saturday up there), then maybe topping off in Redway, and you'll probably need another fill up on the way home.

I figure there's enough fixed costs to participate that an entry fee would only be an excuse for people not to enter.

I only ask that you recognize that I'm not asking for anyone to violate the law and be responsible for yourselves- if you do something stupid, don't blame me.
I have never done anything like this but it sounds like blast. Would I be fine on stock rims and newer all-seasons? It is great fun, and very beginner-friendly, the first half of the day we'll all be caravaning together anyway, the timed sections are paved and really easy to stay on course, you should be just fine on stock rims and tires, I only reccomend a full sized spare because if one does suffer a flat, you are probably a long ways away from anyplace that can fix it, too far to want to go on a donut spare.

I'll put you down on the list, let me know if anything changes...

Still need some tranny work on the Justy, but when it is good to go I will be so down for this trip. Might need to run sweeps being a teeny lil 1700lb 1.2L car, but w/ true part time 4WD I have been able to get through some nasty crap with it and those gravel sweepers will be straight up heaven. It's been a long road with this lil car, but I cannot wait to get it dirty again. 5 new teeny RE92s and will hopefully be ready to rock in a couple months. I think I have a diffy problem, so it needs a teardown. This sounds like such a blast.

eastbaysubaru 09-13-2007 12:40 PM

Justy would be a fun car in the dirt. A guy I rallyX'd with in Colorado had a Justy with a 2.2L Legacy Turbo swap. Tons 'o fun!

Back from 2 weeks vacation and catching up on all the posts to this thread while I was gone. Looking forward to the 29th/30th. I'll be running solo and will bring my Alfa Elite rally computer. No Palm Pilot for me!

Re the "primitive" campsite, should I bring the porta potty or is one provided?!

There are 2 standard issue forest service/BLM outhouses.

And there IS "potable" water as well, so its not all that primitive, just no showers or RV hook-ups.

We also just came back from a 2-week road trip. I suspect we may have been near some of the roads we'll be hitting? We'll soon see!

Also, any details for the optional Mon and Tues? Roll-call for those days?

Count me/us as a maybe for now. Got to figure out scheduling.

As an aside, I'd love to try our Usal road sometime on the lost coast. We just bought a personal locator beacon, which we hope never to use, but now feel better about getting off into the hills.
