** STARLITE 2007 - advance notice!!

I received this email today from a friend of mine. Please follow the link below and complete the survey if you are at all interested in doing this epic event.

***************************

Starlite is BACK! Ron Dunlop has received offical permission from the SBSCC to stage the event next year.

Ron has sent snail mail flyers to everyone on the Santa Barbara mailing list a few weeks ago. The response has been very good and we getting close to the minimum number of cars to put on the event. However, a lot of you have moved and the flyers came back, so we are reaching out on the internet.

I have found rooms, a conference room and prime rib dinners in Jean for a very reasonable price (probably at the Nevada Landing). We can go all the way and spend a more to stay somewhere in Las Vegas, proper. We can run the event in November to avoid December's cold and snow. That's what the survey is for.

So please, follow this link and respond with your input and preferences:
http://www.mvps.org/directx//starlite/

Thanks!

Thumbs up This thing is a COMPLETE hoot!

I ran this with my twin-turbo Saab 900 in the mid (or late?) 80's. Just a total kick in the pants (even if my partner DID drive us into the desert at 90+ with no damage ~ not even alignment).

It was some of the most challenging roads and driving I have encountered ~ I hope it is still a 'Monte Carlo' type T&D rally?

The December original date meant some fog/snow/rain along the way ~ so maybe November is not such a bad idea?

Count me in for '07!!!!

WOW! Done too.

Hey thanks for completing the survey! Hope you all gave contact information, because apparently they've received some anonymous responses which are not much help.

For now, here is a link to where the Starlite information is posted. The posts are at the bottom of the first page.

so when they say "dig out your rally clocks" is this timed for speed, or do you have to match a time and be consistant kind of thing? It sounds like a high skill drive but i dont think it can be too fast going across the state.

You need to match the time on your rally clock, stopwatch or regular watch to their timing device. You are given a set time to arrive at each checkpoint. The route you take and the speed you drive at to get there are up to you. This event is timed for accuracy not speed.

For a more detailed explanation check out this link and scroll down to "Pan Am (Map-Type Monte Carlo, Known-True-Time Monte Carlo) Rallyes"
http://www.therallyeclub.org/what.htm

This event is open to drivers of all skill levels.

Jane and Brian: Are you going to drive your cars or rent a car? What skill level?

I noticed that some people rent cars, it seems that you would want to drive a vehicle that you are familiar with.

The pace is 'quick'. The time is set on a clear day in the daylight at a quick but safe pace months before... But, when you run the event it is 'winter' and at night (weather, unfamiliar road... and the basic fact that it is DARK makes for an even quicker feeling pace then during the daylight when the pace was set.

I ran this several years in a row in rental Saabs, back when a company named Showcase in L.A. was renting them. I would pull my tires and wheels (off my Saab) and install them and my rally boards, timers etc. on the rental and rock!

I still always felt better in my own car...
