i have no idea what it is, but i once was looking at my filter and accidentally disconnected. th engine wouldn't start and it took me 15 minutes to realize it had fallen off. it was bizarre and pissed me right off.

How large in diameter is said hose?
If it's about 5/8", it is one of the PCV hoses, and as you found out, if loose, the engine has one big vacuum leak.

Ok there is only one hose that leads off of the bottom of the tubing directly behind the MAF. I had the same problem you mentioned earlier when I did and induct service to my car. So I would gues it is probably 5/8 in diameter....i thought it might be a oil thing, but then why would it lead to the side of the mani? why do they need to put a vaccum hose right there? what purpose does it serve?
not sure, but i think you can leave the hose off. it is definatly safe short term, not sure about the long term affects, if i dont get off my lazy *** and get to autozone to buy vacumn tube, i will be able to tell you the long term affects, if any

You'll have to plug the hole in the intake and put a small breather filter on the hose or you'll pull in dirty air to the motor.
