Question Timing belt

Hi all. Have question about timing belt, does anyone had timing belt break. Car has only 88000 miles, (it is legacy OB 1998 2.5 eng) and belt broke today, engine just stoped running, no strange sound or smth, fuel pump works fine. I will check tomorrow if it is only belt, or all internal too, better not.
Thanks for replies

Timing belts are normally replaced at 98,000KM's on Subarus, seeing as 88,000miles is about 125,000kms I would say HELL YEAH it is likely that it would break at that point. You're about 20,ooo miles beyond when it should have been replaced.

i had that same engine in my legacy. From what i've heard, and what i did was to replace the Timing belt every 60,000. do a compression test on your engine before you even worry about replacing the belt. usually when they break, there is contact and you bend every valve on one bank, if not both. Sorry to hear about that though. Good luck.

Looks like going to be all nine yards, heads resurface, valves. Because belt didn’t break by itself, could be water pump or tensioner, not sure yet, still looking for shop, by the way I'm in Chicago area, dealer starting 1500 just to take heads off, first small shop started for all work with parts 1500, find another for 1250 still looking, somehow hard to tell without opening engine and compression test, still looking for best deal.

it's a good idea for you to get the valves adjusted also. Usually at around 60,000mi your engine will start throwing misfire codes twice in a row on the same cylinder. usually cause the valves need to be adjusted. I bought my leg with 80,000 and the previous owner never had the valves adjusted and i ended up sucking a valve. What I did, and may work for you, was i bought a JDM motor form Attarco in berkley for $800. Threw on all my american stuff(intake, egr, coil pack, blah blah blah) and away you go.

By the maintenance Book
Camshaft drive belt 2.2L 30000 miles - Inspect, 60000 - replace
2.5L 30000 - Inspect, 60000 - Inspect, 90000 - Inspect
105000 - Replace

I'm not trying to be a dick, but your belt is broken. Most people I know, includingall the subaru techs at the dealership I used to work at say replace at 60,000. But what the book says is a mute point right about now. If you need any help or are interested in doing the motor swap(pretty damn easy. took me a day) email me at GSMotorsports@aol.com. Good luck.

I agree 60000 replace good, but what is the point, replacing if belt still good, belt break not because it was bad, something stop turning how it should, pump or smth else and that opposite force ripped the belt.

the only things in there are the crank pulley(teeth), cam sprockets(teeth) water pump(friction) and the tensioner pulley(friction). If your water pump were to suddenly freeze, the belt would continue to slide across the pulley, usually making a horrible squealing sound. one of the cam sprockets would have had to of stoped suddenly to cause the belt to suddenly snap.

Finally result, timing belt didn't break, just get loose, problem was tension pulley screw just break off, and belt get loose, so the valves got by they heads, so new valves and heads work for now, maybe smth later.
